A dedication portrait of the Goddess Holda. Holda is a goddess known to many regions of the ancient Germanic world. While each culture had their own representation of Holda, many similarities cross. Throughout the Germanic world She is associated with the coming of winter, the spirit world, the spinning of flax and other arts of the home, as well as a protectress of children and witches. She is said to fly the night sky either in a wagon or a spinner’s distaff. It is considered that the riding of the distaff is what inspired the tales of witches riding broomsticks, an image that is still quite popular today. In this depiction of the goddess Holda, She is riding a distaff in a grey wintry sky, heralding the snows. The four corners of Her frame are adorned with elderberries, a snowflake, a flax flower, and a spinning wheel.
Variations of Her name include Holde, Holle, Hulda, and Huld. She inspired the Grimm brothers’ tale Frau Holle.
