Gulf Coast Native sheep are a critically endangered breed of sheep with highly variable fleeces. Their fleeces can range from very fine to very coarse with guard hairs. Here's a great description of this breed's fleece characteristics from the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy: https://livestockconservancy.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/TLC-Fiber-profiles-Gulf-Coast-Native.pdf .
This listing includes all of my white fleeces from this breed. Check out my other listings for natural colored GCN fleeces.
This year's fleeces were fairly clean and strong. Hay and VM are minimal, there is some mud and a few fleeces have quality issues that are mentioned in the listings. All fleeces are untreated and our sheep are 100% grass fed on our organic pastures. Each fleece is slightly different so I have listed them individually below and you will be able to select which fleece you want at check out. Please let me know if you would like pictures or samples of any of the specific fleeces. All fleeces are heavily skirted.
I participate in the Livestock Conservancy Shave 'Em to Save 'Em Initiative and all of the fleeces in this listing are eligible. If you are a fiber artist involved in this project and you would like me to send a SE2SE sticker along with any of these fleeces please let me know.
Ewes:
Minerva (#156) - This is a very fine micron creamy colored fleece with a 2.5 inch staple length and a tight mostly disorganized crimp. It is clean and fairly strong. It is 2.94 lbs. and $35.00 (Sold out)
Bellatrix (#358) also has a fine micron fleece with a staple length of 3 inches. It has a tight, organized crimp with about 1 crimp per 8th of an inch. It is clean though it has a tip break at around .5 inches from the tip. It is slightly discounted for that reason. It is 2 lbs and $18.00
Nymphadora (#97) This fleece is fine with a more relaxed and disorganized crimp (5-6 crimps per inch). It has 3.5 inch staple length. It has some large bits of hay along the back. It weighs 2.4 lbs and is $28.80. (Sold out)
June Carter (#829) This ewe has a fine micron fleece with an organized crimp of about 16 crimps per inch. It has a 3 inch staple length and is strong and clean. It weighs 1.9 lbs and is $23.00
Lavendar (#907) - This fleece is medium in the relative range of microns for my GCN sheep. The staple length is 3.5 inches. It has 10 crimps per inch and is fairly organized. This fleece is a little muddy/dirty on the tips but should wash out well. The fleece is 2.48 lbs and $30.00
Ginny (#283) - Ginny's fleece is medium with a staple length of just under 3 inches and a somewhat organized crimp with around 6 crimps per inch. Her fleece is mostly clean but does have some mud at the tips. It is 3.33 lbs and $40.00.
Miffy (#709) - This fleece is very fine and short with a 2 inch staple length and a tight somewhat disorganized crimp. It has an intermittent break at about .5 inches from the tips so it is discounted. It is 1.84 lbs and $16.00
Bathilda (#338) - This fleece is creamy white and medium fiber thickness. It has a 4 inch staple length with an organized crimp of about 6 crimps per inch. It has some felting on the sides but it can still be easily teased apart. It is 3.43 lbs and $41.00
Dolores (#305) - This is a beautiful medium micron fleece. It is creamy white with a medium organized crimp of around 12 crimps per inch. It has a 3.5 inch staple length and is strong and clean. It is 3.08 lbs and $37.00
Arabella (#317) - This is a coarser fleece with some kempy guard hairs. It is creamy white with a disorganized relaxed crimp. It has a staple length of 3.5 inches but that is not consistent across the whole fleece. It is also a little dirty and so it is discounted. It weighs 3.65 lbs and is $33.00
Amelia (#368) This fleece is medium with very tight organized crimp and a creamy color. It has a 3.5 inch staple length. It is 3 lbs and $36.00.
Muriel (#384) This is a fine white fleece with a very tight organized crimp. It has a staple length of 2.5 inches but it has a wool break throughout the fleece and is therefore discounted. It would still be great for felting. It weighs 2.79 lbs and is $20.00
Rita (#391)This is a fine fleece with a 2.5 inch staple and an organized tight crimp. Unfortunately, it has a bit of a break in some spots and it also has some dried molasses on the back. It’s probably fine for felting. It is discounted. It is 3.43 lbs and $24.00.
Rita (#391) from 2023 This is a super fine white fleece from a first shearing (that got lost in the back of the closet). It has a tight and organized crimp with 16 crimps per inch. It is 1.47 lbs and $18.00. (Sold out)
Lambs: These fleeces are first shearings. They are likely finer and softer than they will be in the future.
#434 This fleece has a staple length of 3.5 inches and a medium, disorganized crimp. It has a tip break at about one inch from the tip so it is discounted. It is 1.81 lbs and $13.00.
#435 This fleece has a 3.5 inch staple length and a medium disorganized crimp. It’s creamy white at the base and a little dirty at the tips. It’s clean and strong and 1.59 lbs. And $19.00
#450 This is a nice fleece with a 3.5 inch staple length and an organized crimp of 6 crimps per inch. It is creamy in color and has a little bit of hay in it. It’s 1.82 lbs and $22.00 (Sold out)
#461 This fleece is kind of yellowed on the outside. I’m not exactly sure if that is because it has a lot of lanolin or if it is just dirty. It doesn’t seem like mud - just yellow. It has a 4 inch staple with a nice mostly organized crimp. Other than the yellowing it is clean and strong. It is 2.63 lbs and $32.00
Rams:
Gilderoy (#239) - This fleece is medium fine with a staple length of 3.5 inches and a somewhat organized crimp with 8 crimps per inch. This fleece smells a bit like a ram too. It weighs 3.9 lbs. It is $4848. (Sold out)
Fred (#361) This fleece is fairly fine with a tight crimp that is organized at the base and becomes less organized at the tips. It has a staple length of 4.5 inches and it is clean but it is not uniformly strong. While it doesn’t have a break, it pulls apart easier than I’d like when I pull it to test the strength. It is slightly discounted for that reason and would make a great felting fleece. This fleece is 3.8 lbs and $34.00
George (#365) This fleece is also with an organized, tight crimp. It has a staple length of 3 inches and like Fred’s fleece is is slightly discounted because it is not super strong, though it does not have a distinctive break. This fleece is 3.17 lbs and $29.00
