My work starts from a blank sheet of metal, copper or silver, that I roller print using antique and vintage laces. The result is sometimes a vague texture that can resemble anything from snake skin to a landscape and other times there is a clear pattern that shows images of tiny flowers and poka dots from the lace. I make deliberate choices based on these textures. Because of this process, pieces will vary, but all are designed with intention.
I love color and try to incorporate it into my work by pushing the potential of the metal itself. I use oxidation in silver to pull blues and purples that aren't often seen in silver. The white "frosted" color is achieved by raising the fine silver to the surface and then highlighting the textures by shining the top surface. Copper pieces are either heat treated or a green patina is applied. All color treatments and patinas are a time sensitive process that also creates variations, but I make sure to match earrings as closely as possible.
Stay tuned for new pieces using a fun new technique for me called water casting! I've been trying to use my scraps in a sustainable way that is fun and different. I melt unusable pieces down and pour them into a bucket of water and as it hits the water it cools in organic and assymetrical shapes of all sizes. Currently the shop offers simple studs using this technique, but I'll be experimenting soon with more.
For the last 6 years, Delicate Hammer Studio has mostly been a traveling business, to art fairs in the midwest. I started working at the bench for a designer jewelry store in Prairie Village last August and got married this March! The new job has increased my skills and influenced my designs beyond what I had expected, but it has made it harder for me to travel and show my work at fairs. My hope is to continue offering my wears online and continue designing and sharing them with you here.
All works are either lacquered or waxed to maintain colors and provide low maintenance as they're worn. Pieces should look the same from purchase to sale without upkeep in your store.
