Announcement    Between the State of CA trying to get every tax dollar and Etsy trying to comply, They put me out of business for 6 months. As I reopen, lots of new pieces will appear, and lots of old ones will only be on my Patern site at:
JimzGemz.com

I am adding a leading "Natural" to the gemstones that I have fabricated from natural materials, and also to others that I am confident of their being natural.

Some materials are almost always treated, like Turquoise, to give them strength, and brighten the color, so the Turquoise pendants that are natural are noted in the description.

I sell only a few materials that are not 100% natural which includes (for simplicity, they are mostly on my Pattern Site):
Blue Goldstone a glass with metal particles to make it sparkle
Sugilike- which is a mixture of Sugilite and other materials
Kingman and King's Manassa Turquoise which are compressed materials
Mohave Turquoise a mixture of materials including Turquoise

JimzGemz has lots of laces, chains and beaded chains that we are now offering with more of our pendants. The possibilities are extensive:
SUEDE LACES- These are long soft leather laces that I can tie in a slip knot for you, if you request. That allows the pendant height to be adjusted. colors- brown, taupe, black, green and red.
$3, free with the purchase of 2 or more pendants.
CLOTH LACES- Dark and Light blue. 18" $5
Silver Anodized chains- 18" various clasps (lobster, magnetic...)
SILVER CHAINS-
Snake chains, light weight and heavier weight $20 and $30 (lobster)
Gold plated chains- 18" $20
Beaded chains- 18" and 36" in a variety of gemstones $35 to $50 (you can see some examples where I have paired them in the listings with chains.
OTHERS- BRONZE, HEARTS...

COLORS: The EtsyRank Color Thesaurus gives 12 basic colors. You can think about them as being attached to the numbers of a traditional clock. I will give one example of each-
1 Cyan (also called Aqua), a basic color used in printing, Amazonite.
2 Blue-Cyan, one of the colors of Turquoise.
3 Blue, Lapis Lazuli.
4 Blue Magenta (working on it)
5 Magenta, which is not a pure color a mixture of red and violet.
6 Red Magenta, Charoite.
7 Red, Sonoran Sunrise/Sunset.
8 Orange, or Red-Yellow, Bumblebee Jasper,
9 Yellow, Bumblebee Jasper
10 Green-Yellow, Gaspeite.
11 Green, Chrysoprase
12 Green-Cyan, Aquamarine.
and we are back to Cyan.

The challenge becomes how to name the thousands of colors that people recognnize. I am working on that using a tool called Marmalead, which tells me what names people actually use to search...

More on names of gemstones- there is much confusion because a particular gemstone/mineral/rock has a number of names, and different gemstones/ have the same name. A couple of examples of multiple names:
Blue Ice, Lapis Lace Onyx, Blue Sheelite, a rare mineral from Turkey. What is it? a mixture of Calcite (CaC03), Dolomite (CaMgCO2) and Sheelite (CaWO4). The Calcite is white, the Dolomite is blue, and the Sheelite is yellow/tan/brown. None of the names are really accurate, since it is not ice, it does not contain any Lapis (Lazurite), and the Sheelite is not blue!?!

A soapy green/yellow mineral with a lizard like appearance is known as Serpentine, Lizardite, or Healarite. What is it Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4. It is also known as Serpentine, Nepoulite, Antigorite, but ours is not Chrysotile (which is fibrous). The problem is that Serpentine being fibrous is like Asbestos, somewhat hazardous. Our Lizardite is Soapy, not fibrous, so we are sticking with that name.

RESTOCK REQUESTS- Almost everything made at JimzGemz is one of a kind. Having said that, there are some pieces that I could make another one that is similar if not identical. When the item is sold, and I could make another one, it will allow restock requests. This is an opportunity to buy another one, and if you want, it can be customized (for example an item made in silver could be made in gold, etc.) Changing the design could change the cost, either up or down. If you are a retail vendor, and want to buy multiple items, there may also be a discount.

MYTHS AND LORE are a tradition in the gem and mineral (and crystals) marketplace, BUT ETSY has a rule against "metaphysical claims". SO, I will be taking this fun stuff down, but please be patient, there are lots of keystrokes to do it.

Why does this language thing make a difference, well, for some folks selling "Fordite", that paint did not appear on Ford cars from the factory, in all likelihood, it was not car paint at all! I am not going to name names, but you can probably spot the paint color of cabochons or pendants that were never on a car, if you think about it. Our Fordite either came from the Detroit plants, and Corvettite came from the GMC plant, and our Minnesota Fordite came from the St. Paul Suburb, St. Louis Park, Ford plant, where they used more exotic colors.

I am posting a couple dozen Fordite & Corvettite cabochons. They have not been drilled, and the shapes can be refined for your type of finishing. Let me know what you want for each one, and I can "finalize" the shape, drill it for a bail, wire wrap, etc.

I am now "bulk listing", i.e. putting entire trays on Etsy. This saves me a huge amount of time, and gives you a larger selection of gemstones. What to do is you pick out the gemstone by row and column in the listing, and I will list it separately, or you can buy with PayPal.

I have a Pattern website, which allows me to Blog about what we do. I Hope you will go there, as it has lots of information on how the rocks and stones are made into gemstones. and more listings, some that are not on Etsy.

I have acquired tooling and wire in a wide variety of materials and gauges. That will allow me to make various jump and twirl bails, and wire wraps. Materials include-
Brass 16, 18,20, 22, & 24 gauge (Approx. 1.2 to 0.6mm)
Bronze 18, 20,22 gauge
Copper 18, 20, 22, 24 gauge
Gold-filled 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 gauge
Gold Twisted Wire, a few gauges
Gold-plated (but then again, I won't be using this unless requested)
Nickel 18,20,22,24 gauge
Sterling silver 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 gauge
Sterling silver twisted wire 20,22 gauge
Pure silver
With the tooling, I can make round and oval jumps and twirls from about 4mm to 20+mm Internal Diameter.
SO, if you want a custom bail, just ask. In some cases, there will be no charge, and in most cases a modest charge (a few dollars), to swap a bail.

I am now offering drilling and bail attachment as a service. Depending on the material, thickness, size of hole, type and size of wire, number of twirls, etc. I can do it for you. Just send me a Request for Quotation.

A few words about customization/personalization- Gemstones with face or side drilled holes can have the bails swapped. Earrings can have the ear wire swapped. Necklaces can have the clasp/closure swapped. Details of customization of gemstones and earrings are in the following paragraphs. Personalization refers to adding letters etc. to a stone by engraving, a plan for the future, but not yet.
Back to customization,,,
First, earrings- Many earrings can have the ear wire changed. There are several choices- lever-backs, kidney wires, fish-hooks. Lever-backs are the least likely to be lost. Kidney wires are also secure, but a little more difficult to attach. Fish-hooks are the easiest to attach, and to loose. Each of these is available in Silver, Silver-plated, Gold-filled, gold plated, surgical stainless, and other metals. I recommend surgical stainless, as silver tarnishes in the finest of families. As made, I try to select the ear-wire metal that most closely matches the metal of the rest. The ear-wires are also available in various sizes, also selected to match the rest.
Second, necklaces- Many if not most chains can have the clasp or closure swapped. I have gold filled, gold plated, silver, silver plated, surgical stainless, copper clasps in a variety of sizes, and in lobster claw, screw, magnetic, S-ring, an toggle clasps. When you order, specify the size and type and I can customize for you.
Third, a few words about pendant bails. I have made over 10,000 pendants, and bails are a significant expense. Further, silver tarnishes in the finest of families. SO, I am making fewer pendants with silver or brass bails, and making more with nickel, bronze, or gold-filled jumps rings. The saves me the cost of the more expensive bail, and More Importantly, having to polish all that stuff!
If you want a different bail on a gemstone with front drilled, or side drilled hole, then you can select one from another that you see on my site. In many cases there will be no further charge, but if the bail is gold, or a fancy silver one, I will swap the bail, and post with a slightly higher price.
So, with a front drilled cabochon, I can swap to twirl (number of turns depends on the size of the hole, and diameter of the wire), or a pinch bail (select from the variety you see on my site. With a side drilled cabochon, I can swap from nickle jump rings to bronze, or silver (no charge), or to gold ($5). I can also do some wire work, so if you want to see more metal, make a custom order.

Transversely Drilled gemstones with multi-jump ring "jumps" and twirl bails! Transversely drilling a gemstone leaves the face free of obscuration. JimzGemz has been using silver and gold plated single- turn jump bails. These work fine, but there is a small chance they could open if tugged. Also, gold and silver plating are not forever, and eventually they will show corrosion. Our NEW INNOVATION is to use nickel, bronze, and gold-filled multi-turn jump ring bails. The nickel, bronze and gold-filled metal will not corrode, and the multi-jump format allows for greater strength and security, as well as a little extra sparkle. If you see a gemstone that you want that has a single-turn jump bail you can have it replaced in gold-filled, and/or multi-jump, just specify the number of twirls, and we will add them for $2.50 in silver and $5 in gold. I also have "twisted" or textured jumps in gold and silver...

For the most part, the bails on my pendants are attached by drilling a hole, and either pinching the bail on, or pressing the bail in, and setting with a tiny drop of superglue. I call my bails twirl bails, and there are three types- Top drilled, face/front drilled, and side drilled. These bails are very sturdy. I also do what I call a circumfrential wire wrap, where the wire runs around the edge, which has been prepared to accept and capture the wire. I few of my gemstones have glue-on bails. I do this when there is a substantial probability that the stone might fracture if I drilled it. Further, if someone wants to wire wrap my cabochon, they can do that by using a razor blade to pop the bail off, and then the cabochon will have no hole to hide.

Gemstones with pinch bail can have the bails swapped with others that you see on my website, or from the Bail Upgrades listing. Not all combos will work, but you can ask, and I can try it (usually at no charge, though there is a charge for the upgrades). One of the reasons that you might want to swap the bail (besides simply your taste or desire to match the metal of your chain), is to make sure that the bail will fit over your chain. I can measure the bail opening, if you have a large chain, or your chain has a large clasp.

A few words about Turquoise. I grade it into 4 grades:
****Top Grade- Natural, untreated (not stabilized, or dyed). This material is rare, and you could be hard pressed to find any new material, perhaps a few old pieces from more than 35 years ago, that are Top Grade. I have about 20 Natural Turquoise pendants. When they are gone, they might be difficult to replace.
***High Grade- Un-dyed, but stabilized. I have authenticated many pieces by using acetone on the back. If no dye comes off on the swab, but it is slightly sticky, it has been stabilized. Stabilization is very common as most Turquoise is fragile, has been stabilized, at least on the back side. I have about 50 Authenticated Turquoise pendants. When they are gone, poof!
**Typical Grade, treated- Both dyed and stabilized (probably most of the Turquoise available). I bought about 900 cabs, and finished them, about half of them have been sold. They should last a few more years, then they, too, will be gone.
*Reconstituted- ground and pressed, sometimes with a binder, such as glue or plastic. Mostly this is Kingman, King's Manassa, and Mohave. The reason these are reconstituted is that they are mined out, so they take the tailings to make new material available. If you were to find a natural King's Manassa piece, it would be about 100 times as expensive.

There is a lot of so called Turquoise, that is other material such as Magnesite, or Howlite (Howlith). I do not sell such substitutes. Be forewarned, these materials are commonly sold as Turquoise, and that is not right.

I am developing a rational basis for prices for Turquoise, and other gemstones. For Turquoise, RETAIL prices range from a few $/ct unset, perhaps $7/ct to $140/ct (or more) when set. For my gemstones I am at about
Top Grade "Natural" 3/ct
High Grade ~"Authenticated" $2/ct
Typical Grade "Treated" ~ $1.50/ct
Reconstituted $1/ct
I checked some prices, and their is little top grade available. The Typical grade is a few dollars per carat, unset, and reconstituted about $0.60, unset. The finishing cost usually dominates, so those prices would be about $2 to $20/ct finished.
So mine are about a quarter or less than retail prices.

WHEN A SINGLE DIMENSION IS GIVEN IN MY LISTING, THAT IS THE GEMSTONE'S HEIGHT (not including the bail).

A few words about nickel intolerance- the probability that someone will be nickel intolerant (allergic) is extremely small (less than 1% of people show nickel intolerance), and that is likely mainly if there is a part going around or through the flesh. It is very unlikely that someone would be intolerant of a nickel jump bail!

JimzGemz is trying to get more organized! We now make gemstones with crowns, and flats. Sometimes one side has a crown, and the other side is flat, other times, there are two crowns, or two flats. If the gemstone is described as reversible, that means that both sides are polished, and aesthetically pleasing. Usually, one can tell by reflections whether a photo is of a flat, or a crown, but not always, SO I will endeavor to indicate the shape of both sides. Please be patient, there are lots of listings!

BIRTHSTONES
JANUARY
Garnet, the birthstone of January, occurs in a rainbow of colors. From the fiery orange of Mandarin Garnet (Spessartite) to the rich green of Tsavorite Garnet and to the most widely recognized color of red Pyrope Garnet, it is considered a great gift to symbolize friendship and trust.
Our featured gemstone has been Spessartite, but it has gotten expensive, so will limit our stock, but you can order it.
FEBRUARY
Amethyst, the birthstone of February, is a variety of Quartz that carries a spectacular purple color that ranges from a blend of deep violet and red to a lighter lilac hue. Ancient Greeks believed that the stone protected the wearer from drunkenness and enabled them to keep a balanced mindset.
I am making some very thin pendants, so keep an eye out for them in 2017.
MARCH
Aquamarine, the birthstone of March, has a rich color and has long been a symbol of youth, health and hope. Its mesmerizing color ranges from pale to deep blue and are reminiscent of the sea. A perfect birthstone for March, the Aquamarine creates a beautiful accent to spring and summer wardrobes.
Aquamarine is one of my favorites, and I have many. If you are interested, contact me, and I will see if I have the right one for you.
APRIL
Diamonds, the birthstone of April, are commonly associated with love which make it the perfect gift for a loved one. While white diamonds are most common, fancy colored diamonds can be found in various colors including yellow, blue, pink and a variety of others as well.
Since diamonds are out of a reasonable price range, we offer fancy CZ and more.
MAY
Emerald, the birthstone of May, carries the rich green color of Spring and radiates a beautiful vivid tone. They are considered to be a symbol of rebirth and love. Emeralds are the rarest gemstones and are typically mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Zambia.
I have a number of emeralds, contact me for more information.
JUNE
Pearl: June birthdays claim several birthstones; pearl, moonstone and Alexandrite. Pearls have been wildly popular in jewelry for centuries because of their natural beauty. Alexandrite gemstones are extremely rare and desirable since they change color based on the lighting.
We have a few fantastic corundum alexandrite with a wonderful color change.
We have had moonstones, and may add them again.
JULY
Rubies, the birthstone of July, are considered the king of gems and represent love, health and wisdom. It was believed wearing a fine red Ruby bestowed good fortune on its owner. A Ruby is the most valuable gemstone and its value increases based on its color and quality.
I have some rubies, contact me.
AUGUST
Peridot, the birthstone of August, carries a lime green color and is one of only a few gemstones that exists in only one color. Peridot is believed to instill power and influence as well as bring the wearer magical powers and properties that protect against nightmares.
We are at present sold out of peridot.
SEPTEMBER
Sapphire, the birthstone of September, is most desired in its pure, rich blue color but is present in almost every color including pink, yellow and green. In the Middle Ages the gem was believed to protect those close to you from harm and also represented loyalty and trust.
I have some fabulous sapphires, including violet stars, and Padparadsha!
OCTOBER
Opal: October also has two birthstones; Tourmaline and Opal. Tourmaline is a favorite gemstone for many because it’s available in a rainbow of beautiful colors. Opal gemstones are truly unique because each individual gem is adorned with a one-of-a-kind color combination.
We have an excellent selection of inexpensive opals on Etsy.
NOVEMBER
Topaz, brown/tan: November birthdays are associated with two gems; Citrine and Topaz, both a rich tan-brown. The warm color of Citrine is said to be a gift from the sun and it’s believed to be a healing gemstone. Topaz is most desired in its rich orange Imperial Topaz color but it is found in a variety of rich colors like blue, pink and yellow.
DECEMBER
Topaz, blue: December birthdays have claim to three gemstones; Zircon, Tanzanite,
Blue Topaz, and Turquoise. Each of these gemstones carries a unique blue tone making it a perfect birthstone for Minnesota’s frigid December winters. Zircon can be found in a variety of colors, but blue is the overwhelming favorite.
We typically keep a good selection of blue Topaz, and Turquoise, and are adding Tanzanite.

Gemstone colors and personal color seasons:
Warm colors (autumn colors and spring colors) have red or gold highlights.
Cool colors (summer colors and winter colors) have no red nor gold highlights.
http://lotusmoonjewellery.com/images/EZ_Images/warm-cool-colors.jpg
So what gemstones have such colors?

Warm autumn and spring Green, yellow, orange, golden, red stones (examples, in pure colors these would be ROY- Sonoran Sunrise, Bumblebee,

Cool winter and summer violet, indigo, blue, aqua, pink (in pure colors these would be G. BIV-Malachite, Chrysoprase, Amber, Ruby Zoisite)
Lepidolite, Lapis, Shattuckite, Chryscolla, Aquamarine, Topaz, Apatite, Rhodochrosite,
Look in section Aqua/blue/turquoise, Tiffany,

season neutral, and works with many colors- Labradorite:

A few words about JimzGemz (actually Jimz-Gemz, on Etsy you cannot use the hyphen).

About 90% of what you see started as a rock (rough), was sawed (slabbed), sawed again (trimmed), ground (up to 18 steps on diamond wheels), polished, drilled, milled, and wire wrapped by yours truly (Pierre Espirit, aka Jim of Jimz-Gemz). It takes up to 30 steps to make a finished pendant. There are some pieces where I bought a cabochon (a gemstone with a crown), and repaired and finished it. Much of the Turquoise that I am now putting on Etsy is from a batch I bought from a warehouse that had been there for 25 years. I do not know how old it is, but it is Old Turquoise (called Vintage), probably at least 35 years.

Most of my malachite is also pre-ground and polished material, that I trim, drill, and finish. Most of the other gemstones I sell went through my full 30 step process.

The earrings I sell as Earrings-J and Earrings-S are almost all made from faceted precious gemstones. Plastic or glass beads are only used in Earrings- Jen

ETSY IS NOW REQUIRING THAT WE IDENTIFY PRODUCTION PARTNERS, AND I AM DOING THAT. I have a number of people with special skills or have materials that I cannot obtain, that I use for a few pieces- see production partners list.

I hope this information is helpful, and I make every attempt to be as detailed in the descriptions so that you know what you are getting. No third world junk at JimzGemz!

FOR A DESCRIPTION AND THE MEANINGS OF STONES, GO TO THE END OF THIS SECTION. For example, if you want to be creative- try Zoisite (Ruby Zoisite).

The things that affect the cost of a gemstone are:
1. Color- blues, aqua (Larimar, Chrysocolla, Lapis Lazuli, Lapis Lace Onyx, and others) are popular now, as is purple (Amethyst, Charoite, Sugilite, Stichtite, Eudialyte).
2. Carats- Stone weight in grams or carats (5 carats per gram).
3 Clarity- or transparency, most of my gemstones are opaque or translucent.
4. Cut/Craftsmanship- stone shape, finishing Wrap/bail
5. Cache-Vogue, what is in for this season, etc.
6. Rarity
7. Difficulty to fabricate- hardness, fracture.
8. Effects- Chatoyancy (cat's eye, tiger's eye, hawk's eye, falcon's eye); Adularescence (moonstone effect), change of color (alexandrite), star or fiber effect,

5 "C's" - Color, Carats, Clarity, Cut/Craftmanship, Cache,
& Rarity, and Difficulty to Fabricate, and Effects.
1. Color- more vivid, more costly
2. Carats- price is somewhat in proportion to weight/size. Precious gemstones the cost per carat is relatively constant, but may Decrease with larger gemstones. Major Precious, the cost per carat Increases with the size of the gemstone, sometimes significantly.
3. Clarity- our cabochons are usually not clear, but some have agate/quartz has transparent or translucent portions that add to their beauty. Some of our Major Precious Gemstones are transparent, and the more transparent, usually the more expensive.
4. Cut- for Cabochons, the harder the material the longer it takes to sculpt the stone, and the higher the gloss. For Major Precious Gemstones the number and size of facets can change the brilliance of the gemstones- the more brilliant, the more expensive...
5. Fashion, Style, Cache' what is in style at present.
6. Rarity- some of the gemstones we sell are becoming rare, which drives up the price of the raw materials, notably Shattuckite (a copper mineral), Tiffany stone (Opalized fluorite), and Sonoran Sunrise (a red and multicolor copper mineral). Rhodochrosite is also much harder to find at a a reasonable cost, as are Sugilite and Charoite, Also, Jade has gone up significantly recently. Larimar is going up really fast. These inflation rates can be seen a a difficulty or a benefit. Many gemstones are a really good investment- they go up in price faster than gold!
7. Difficulty to fabricate- some stones are easy to cut, and little material is lost in fabrication. Others are more challenging.
8. Effects, chatoyancy- tiger's eye, opalization, asterism, etc. can be very pleasing, and can add to the cost, especially in some opals.

Overall, JimzGemz selects novel materials and designs not found in many shops...

Between the State of CA trying to get every tax dollar and Etsy trying to comply, They put me out of business for 6 months.

JimzGemz.com

If you don't see a gemstone that is perfect for you, contact us at
DrJPHauck [!at] gmail.com
with your request.
