A couple years back, my husband Keon asked me a question and this business was the answer, "You keep buying all that fabric and making those bows, why don't you sell them?" I visited Etsy.com and saw that there was a demand for them. That was when the idea of possibly taking my hair bow hobby into a full-on business venture was born.
I came from a family of small business owners. My paternal grandfather was a tailor. My mother as far as I can remember has always hustled as she has owned many businesses. My father left his successfully career to start his own business at the age of 35. They believed in forging their own futures through hard work, sweat and tears. They were their own bosses and worked six sometimes seven-days-a-week to build their businesses from nothing. All sacrificed and believed in the value of creating something tangible – a business.
So it is no surprise that I inherited this entrepreneurial spirit. I am always thinking of business ideas. I am always imagining ways to create something from nothing. After my last baby I decided to find a business I can start.
I emigrated from Guyana as a child and one memory stuck out of school girls routinely wearing ribbons in their hair. As a result l have always had a love affair with hair bows and how beautiful they look in little girls hair.
I am a stay-at-home mom to three children – two boys and a girl, our baby and my business namesake. Shortly after my daughter was born and had enough hair to wear a bow, I began making hair bows to style my daughter’s bald head so people would easily recognize she was a girl.
I started experimenting with making hair bows using ribbons and fabric I found at Joanne fabrics, Michael’s, thrift stores and Fabricland in every color and style to match my daughter’s outfits.
What started off as a hobby for me has turned into Maky’s Bows; handmade, fabric, hair bows, hairclip and headbands. . It takes a lot of time, but it’s worth it because I enjoy doing it. It has become my passion.
I want to not only continue what I doing, but expand what Maky’s Bows offers.
Seek what soothes your soul!
