The "Annabel" 1770s Cap Pattern from Virgil's Fine Goods The Annabel Cap is appropriate for approximately 1770–1785 and is based on sketches of the middling-gentry classes from the 1770s–1780s. The earlier, smaller versions of this cap evolved to cover the large hairstyles later in the period, and this shape was popular until it started to transition horizontally in the mid-1780s. The cap features a large caul to accommodate a medium-large hairstyle, large rounded bands, and two whip-gathered ruffles.
The pattern instructions are for hand-stitched construction, as studied in period originals. Techniques explained include rolled hems, whip-rolled gathers, and the butted whipstitch seam.
Cap Pictured is made from a silk organza.
