Founded in 1999, Ruth Ellis Center (REC) has established a national reputation for quality and innovation in providing trauma-informed services for lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth, and young adults, with an emphasis on young people of color, experiencing homelessness, involved in the child welfare system, and/or experiencing barriers to health and wellbeing. From providing outreach and safety-net services, to skill-building workshops and HIV prevention programs, REC is known for their unique approach. The COVID pandemic has led to a dramatic rise in death by suicide for young people who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. For years, the Ruth Ellis Center in Highland Park, MI has offered outreach including drop-in services, housing, and health and wellness programs. When the “safe space” had to go virtual, the nonprofit used every platform available to reach out to vulnerable youths.
