This Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly stumpwork design uses both thread painting embroidery and beading techniques to create a 3D “pinned butterfly.” The sparkle of the beads and sequins makes it absolutely magical. I see this framed needlework design fitting right into the maximalist gallery wall of a dark academia apothecary or as a gift for your favorite Entomology nerd. This pattern is recommended for intermediate to advanced embroiderers, however I’ve written the instructions for the ambitious beginner, so don’t hesitate to give it a try.
This design is sized for a 6" minimum hoop. Hoop sizes are variable, depending on how you want to finish your project (hoop art or framed art).
