Caleb shirt, new and improved!
Caleb from Big Mouth is clearly an autistic-coded character, and this is my favorite autistic TV moment of all time! When Caleb writes "GYM WALL" on the gym wall and says, "Now people know."
Why is this so great? Autistic people love things to have clear definitions, and we love to state the literal. Identifying, and in this case, labeling things that are true for us all helps us connect with the people around us. Hence the "now people know."
He's thinking, "I'm being helpful, right?"
I get it! In my home I literally have a label on my bathroom door. Why? Well, now people know!
The best part - the context of this moment is all the characters from Bridgeton Middle are combating shame. Nobody gives a shit about anything. They have more or less defeated 'the shame wizard.' Caleb, up to this point, has probably gotten a lot of shit for stating the literal and explaining things that don't need to be explained. So in this sequence of everyone just freely accepting and expressing themselves, this is how Caleb unmasks.
And that's a hugely relatable for me - I constantly feel like I'm expressing this 'really important, helpful, insightful information' and people looking at me like "everyone knows that."
But in this situation where everyone decided, 'I'm going to stop being ashamed of what I really think, how I really feel of what I wanna say,' this is how Caleb handles it!
