Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (in present day France), 628-659, chose a life of devout prayer and service over marriage. Her icons include mice climbing her staff, symbolizing holy souls in Purgatory whom she helped rise towards heaven through her prayers; from this symbolic origin, she became linked with cats as well. The 2 walls in my artwork represent two monasteries built by Gertrude's mother after the death of her father, to protect her from kidnapping and marriage. She died in 659 on what is now her Feast Day, March 17. The text within the image is from a traditional prayer to St Gertrude; the full text is on the back of the prayercards (see Photo 3).
I look forward to adding names and dates to this piece (see Photo 4 for a sample) for Confirmations or other special celebrations. The along her shoulder is a lovely place to add custom details - such a unique gift! Names and dates are added by me, by hand, in text that matches the lettering within the original piece.
Prints measure 12x18, 11x14, 8x10, or 5x7 inches on bright white, acid free, 100# paper. A narrow white border runs around the edge of the print. All of my prints are professionally run by a small, locally owned printshop. Each print is signed in pencil by the artist (me), with the date and name of the piece handwritten on the back as well. This image is also available as a set of 12 2.5x3 inch prayercards in a colorful organza bag. Featuring the main image on the front, the back has the quote in black & white hand lettered text. They make a unique and meaningful favor for Confirmation celebrations.
Sold un-matted, this piece does look wonderful with a variety of mat colors and frames - bright and contemporary, it could serve as an eye-catching yet meaningful accent to any room (dorm room, teen room, office decor...).
The print will be shipped to you via USPS in a protective plastic sleeve with a backing board in a sturdy photo/document mailer. 12x16s are printed to order (so might take a week or so longer), rolled carefully and shipped in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube.
