The Mermaid's Tale...
She didn't start out as a mermaid... but sometimes, works in progress have a mind of their own. My intent was to create a lounging nude - the type traditionally found over a saloon bar. I infused an art-noveau flow to her lines, with loose trailing wires flowing outward from her wrists, ankles and hair.
At installation time (for an exhibit within an exotic lingerie shoppe) something interesting happened as I teetered atop the ladder.. As the nude wire figure slipped slightly upright, from horizontal to diagonal, the shop staff and customers exclaimed, "We LOVE your mermaid!"
I pinned the wire figure to the wall at that diagonal, climbed down the ladder to take a long view... and oh my! She really IS a Mermaid... all she needed was a little extra last-minute wire to delineate her tail fins. Her hair and hands look as though rising through a mass of bubbles or sea weed... She became so much more than I ever could have imagined. I love it when the sculptures take on a life of their own.
Created in 2011, my original Mermaid won the Susy “Q” Zink Memorial cash award (for art that makes one wonder, chuckle or stretch the imagination). As part of my collection of wire fantasy art sculptures, she helped win Best of Show at Westercon Seattle in 2012, Top Judges Awards (2 out of 7) at World Science Fiction Convention (Chicon) 2012, and Best of Show, World Science Fiction Convention (oneStarCon) 2013.
My original 2D 7ft Mermaid sold to an Etsy collector in France... by request, I am offering more in the Mermaid series... each quite similar in appearance and spirit, but uniquely one-of-a-kind!
A second 7ft Mermaid was commissioned for a vacation condo with a nautical theme... so much fun! I can make Mermaids in any size that suits your space... my 42" version of this mermaid is $500.00.
