Years ago I had a copy of this book and lent it away. I've just gotten another copy and reread the whole thing. Mary's words are so beautiful, and I love that she learned to paint first to illustrate her books, then because she enjoyed it. Her watercolors of Lake Michigan are filled with juicy "edible colors" that she painted from her window. And being from a Florida beach, I loved seeing the snow and ice on her beach during the winter.

Dear Mary, I have to tell you how much you influenced my move back to our home state of Michigan, from Vermont. In the 1990's I bought your book, "The Fourth Coast". You had me at page one! ~ We did move back and happily swam in those turquoise lakes again. Now, we live in upstate NY and yearn to go back home again. Your beautifully painted book inspires me again. Thank you Mary, you are truly a lovely person. ~Judy
