Keycaps are small covers made to replace the standard keys on a mechanical keyboard. They can be made from all kinds of materials and feature different colors and designs.

Yes! Keycaps can be replaced by carefully removing the existing keycaps on your keyboard and snapping your new ones on.

Not only can your keycaps be replaced, they can also be completely customized based on how you use your keyboard and what you’d like them to look like. Some people replace their keycaps in order to use a different key profile or lessen the sound of typing. You can also swap out your keycaps purely for visual reasons. Custom and artisan keycaps feature a variety of designs, from kittens to food to tie dye to nearly anything else! Replacing your keycaps is a fun way to make your keypad uniquely yours.

The best keycaps for your keyboard depend on the make and model of your keyboard as well as what look you’d like to achieve.

If you prefer a bright, simple look, a full set of keycaps in a neutral color like white are a great choice. Or, you can opt for a spacebar keycap and swap out just that key. A WASD set of keycaps is a popular choice for gaming and is used strictly on the W, A, S, and D keys.

If you spend a significant part of your day typing, you may find that rubber keycaps are more comfortable than traditional plastic keycaps. These rubber caps can also reduce the sound of typing.

To personalize your keyboard even more or just have some fun, try replacing just one key—like the “escape” key—with a fun, custom 3D keycap that makes you smile each time you look at it.

No, keycaps aren’t universal because keyboards vary greatly. Keycaps are typically available only for standard mechanical keyboards. If your keyboard has low-profile keys, the keycaps will be too tall and it’s best to use flat keyboard stickers or a silicone keyboard cover to personalize your keyboard. To find the best keycaps for your keyboard, check the product listing closely or message the seller to confirm the dimensions of the new keycaps.

If you’ve got a specific keycap design in mind or want to create a custom set as a gift for the gaming-enthusiast in your life (or yourself!), Etsy sellers have many different sets of custom keycaps you can use as inspiration. Then, work with the independent shop to update any details you’d like to change to make the keys truly your own.

The independent artists behind the small shops on Etsy create custom keycap sets where you can choose design elements like:

  • Custom colors: Whether it’s your alma mater, favorite sports team, or simply the color combo of your dreams, get a full set of custom color keycaps or just a few specific keys.
  • Characters: If you’ve got a favorite game to play, swap out a few of your common keystrokes with keycaps designed to look like your favorite anime characters or settings.
  • Photos: Whether it’s a picture of your furry BFF or your human companion, share a snapshot with an Etsy seller for a custom photo keycap.

Many Etsy shops also design whimsical and ultra-creative artisan keycap designs. These unique keycaps often feature tiny characters in detailed, imaginative settings, all created in miniature. Other designs include cool 3D keycaps in the shape of animals, food, or silly objects.

As you shop for new keycaps for your mechanical keyboard on Etsy, you’ll be able to choose from many different materials, profiles, and designs. Depending on how you plan to use your keycaps—work, play, or a little of both—and the overall look you’re trying to achieve.

Keycap materials

The best material for keycaps depends on how often you’ll be using that key and what feels best to your fingers.

  • Rubber keycaps can be comfortable for frequent use. For taller keycap designs (like cute rubber duckies) that you might occasionally bump your finger against, rubber designs are a bit softer.
  • Silicone keycaps are similar to rubber designs, but have a bit more flex to them. They can also help reduce the sound of typing by cushioning your fingers as you tap the keys.
  • Ceramic keycaps are the choice for people who enjoy the sounds of typing on their computer because the firm, weighty material adds an extra “thock, thock” sound to their keystrokes.
  • Jelly keycaps are often made from POM, an engineered thermoplastic that creates high stiffness and low friction, allowing you to quickly slide your fingers over the keycaps.

Keycap profiles

Keycap profiles refer to the size and shape of the full keycap set. The size and shape of the keycaps can influence their comfort, the typing feel, as well as the overall sound they produce. The keycaps for each row of the keyboard have a slightly different angle to them in each profile:

  • OEM, or original equipment manufacturer, profiles are the most common keycap profile, are standard on most keyboards, and are shaped for typing comfort.
  • Cherry keycaps are about half the height of OEM keys but feature the same sculpted profile. The walls of these keys can be a bit thinner overall, too.
  • SA keycaps are tall and very sculpted and typically create a louder, traditional typing sound. They’re often not used for gaming because the taller height takes some getting used to.
  • XDA keycaps are low-profile keys with a uniform sculpted top for all rows. This uniformity can sometimes make it difficult to get used to typing with these keycaps.
  • DSA keycaps also feature a uniform top profile to the keys, but they’re the shortest profile available.

Keycap designs

Once you’ve decided on the material and profile you prefer, it’s time to pick a design. This often begins with the material the keycap is made from, as some materials are often solid and others can be decorative.

  • Pudding keycaps are translucent and allow the light from the keyboard to shine through the keys. Depending on the color of the keycap, this light will appear colored, too.
  • Clear keycaps put the mechanics of your mechanical keyboard on full display, and similar to pudding keycaps, they appear to light-up by revealing the light of the keyboard.
  • Colored keycaps may feature a gradient or specific pattern when sold as a set, or you can mix and match specific colors and key combinations.
  • Japanese keycaps are a popular design style that often features a 3D pagoda in front of an idyllic setting.
  • Resin keycaps are made of clear or colored resin for a translucent appearance and often feature elements suspended in their design. Flowers, miniature characters, and different resin colors are all popular designs.

When it’s time to clean your keycaps, it’s important to check the seller’s listing for specific details on how to best spruce them up. Some designs are printed on the keycaps and could be harmed if you use harsh chemicals. Begin by wiping your keycaps gently with a soft, dry cloth—microfiber is a great choice. If you’re going to use a cleaning solution on your keycaps like rubbing alcohol or soapy water, it’s a good idea to remove them from the keyboard first to avoid damaging its mechanical components.
