Reinhold Thomas’ career as an abstract sculptor extends more than thirty years. Emigrating from Europe in 1954 to California, Thomas studied at the California State University, Hayward from 1969 to 1973, and in Southern California at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona where he studied architecture. With a well rounded repertoire of technical knowledge, his work stems from large monumental [public art] pieces to relief sculpture [residential] adorning galleries and residences throughout California and the West Coast. His fascination with architecture and structure has been a constant thread linking the diverse mediums at his disposal; e.g. steel, bronze, aluminum, glass, ceramic, wood, and fabric.
Always evolving, Thomas continues to create new and exciting sculpture for residential and public enjoyment. His love for nature and his environmental sensitivity has led to his use of recycled material for most of his work, especially residential, garden and interior. All or most of his models are also recycled materials, but due to the ultimate finished product, these pieces will be made from new stock. Whether large [public] or small [residential] Thomas’ continued desire to explore new and imaginative materials has resulted in a portfolio of expression and distinctive vision.
Nurturing us with his organic shapes and fabulous colors… engaging us with his monumental and architectural style… he is a prominent artistic force in today’s world. With his vision of the future, he is always on the cutting edge of modernism. Yet Reinhold Thomas’ spirit is well established and consistent with timelessness.
