My name is Laurie and I am an Okie nurse from the US, transplanted to Hungary with my two young boys, cat and Angora rabbits. We live on a small farm, now consisting of the aforementioned bunnies-cat-children, and a number of chickens, ducks, dogs, wild hedgehogs and the odd goat. We try to exist as naturally as we can (whilst keeping our sanity.)
As an introvert growing up on a small farm in the midwestern US, animals were my first trusted friends; the first languages I really learned were their languages, for they each have their own, don't they. Art was another outlet, and in nature it is all around us! I also appreciate the practical and thrifty nature of things - most farm kids do. It's difficult for me to throw away anything potentially 'useful,' so you will often see these types of items used in my up-cycled handmade items. Being able to combine this love of practicality with my love of animals and tactile art has lead to a great passion for all things fiber, and Angora rabbits have been such a marriage of all these loves. They are peaceful, gentle creatures which calm my spirit and have also been such a conduit to reach out to people all over the world through teaching and sharing bloodlines. They have also been a segue into a whole world of fiber art including spinning and needle felting. Needle felted commissions are a joy and a challenge - I just love creating them for people!
Horses have also played a large role in my life over the years. Small shows and back country roads were the norm; the confidence building relationship of a girl and her horse can't be undone. I didn't learn to ride a bicycle until college - they just don't balance like a horse does; can't trust them! Discovering traditional handmade Hungarian tack has been such an incredible experience. I love sharing these truly unique pieces with other horse enthusiasts! It's also wonderful income for the artisans here who produce them, and is an incentive to keep the ancient arts alive.
I love all things vintage, traditional and folk art, and adore scouring local farmers markets here in Hungary to find treasures to share with the world. There are so many people with family roots in the country of Hungary, and it has been such a joy to share bits of Hungary and Hungarian culture with them!
I love candy! And I love sharing it with you! All orders come to you with a bit of Hungarian sweetness tucked into the package. Life just can't get too sweet!
Funds raised on Etsy are used to feed ourselves and our farm animals. We are also saving toward the purchase and maintenance of a small flock of Hungarian heritage sheep, the Racka.
Tulipán means 'tulip' in Hungarian, a symbol of love, friendship, and Hungary itself.
