Hello, we are Steve and Sharon. You may be asking “why did we make the Mormon Seattle Temple out of LEGO?” Well, for starters, neither of us enjoyed playing with LEGO as children. Surprise! Yes, it wasn’t until we were married, had kids, and they grew up building LEGO kits. So we can blame our son, who started asking for the annual Christmas-themed LEGO kit every year.
Then, Sharon discovered that there were LEGO Harry Potter kits, and she was hooked. For Steve, it was the Lord of the Rings kits that drew him in. But we were always only building the kits that we’d buy at the store.
That all changed in the summer of 2015, when we found ourselves with the opportunity to purchase a big batch of used LEGO through a garage sale. As we sorted through it all, we realized there might be a little money to be made reconstructing old LEGO sets. This led to seeking out more used LEGO, until soon it felt like our house was getting overrun by LEGO!
Finally, the Relief Society (the womens group) in our church ward were planning a special event to get together and make assorted crafts, and they were seeking crafting ideas. Since LEGO had invaded our lives so much by now, we threw out the idea that they should build our local Seattle Temple out of LEGO.
It was shocking that we couldn’t find a suitable small pattern on the Internet, so Steve set off to build his own design. Fortunately, having so much LEGO in the house made it easy to try different things. A basic design was put together in just a few hours; then took a few days adjusting to make it good and solid. Sharon got involved with her design for the angel Moroni statue.
The result was a micro-scale temple that was a huge hit! So many people at church wanted one, that... well… now here we are selling kits and instructions.
And, if you hadn’t guessed by now: Yes, we're Mormon!
