Yes, Turtle is actually my last name.
It's perfect for me and easy to remember!
I have to start out by saying that I have been painting or drawing to some degree or another my whole life. And at this point I can't be any happier doing just what you see here in my pictures. I love to bring new life to tired, been-around-the-block, great bones vintage furniture pieces...or something along those lines! I enjoy browsing flea markets, street fairs, antique and vintage stores, garage sales and auctions...you name it. These are all the places where I acquire my "goodies".
Oh yeah...and occasionally I'll come home to find a stray piece left at my garage door!
I have an art studio/laundry room in one section of my basement. (I'm a multi-tasker!)
The rest of the space is taken up mostly by my finds. It is nice, neat and clean but crowded, it could double maybe as an episode of "The Hoarders"! I don't know what to say other than I like to have choices. I never know what I might feel like or be inspired to paint at any given time. It's like picking an outfit out for the day.
Also, I must mention that I am very lucky to have an understanding husband who is the reason I can do what I love.

So...when I decide what to paint, whether it's for my shop or a commission, I begin by inspecting each piece from top to bottom. I make repairs if necessary and give a good cleaning inside and out. The prep to me is the important first step in my process. It's like a good breakfast...it is what you build on going forward. Don't get me wrong tho...my furniture doesn't look brand new and most show their age upon inspection. The bumps, scratches and dings are what makes the character of each unique. All my pieces work to the best of my ability, drawers slide easily, veneer is glued on securely, hardware is cleaned and in good shape, etc.
I am not tied to any one particular brand of paint. I have tried most all over the years and have my go-tos. I utilize different painting techniques and multiple layers of color for each individual piece as sometimes the furniture tells me what to do. Sounds crazy I know, but true. Deciding to distress or not or antique or not or just leave the paint alone is something I put a lot of thought into. It is my last step before I seal each with a matte varnish. I do not wax any of my furniture...Only the drawer rails.

I have fun and I take great pride in what I do. I pay attention to detail. I love to paint and I care about each piece I turn out. I think that is evident in my finished product. I want my pieces to last many more years and become the next generations' family heirlooms.
