Growing up with parents who were creative in their own way, they established a home where we kids could express ourselves and be ourselves. From that childhood I learned the grace of combining art with function, because in our house there was nothing that didn’t have a purpose or significance for us. It was years into adulthood before I realized I was trying to recreate spaces (and subsequent artwork) to reflect that experience.
Tiles are a tactile way to combine beauty with function. I use patterns and designs found in textiles and symbols from West Africa (as a nod to my forebears) to create work that attracts the eye and has meaning. From my creative practice as a graphic designer, I gravitate to bold images, colors and textures. I’m always seeking cultural patterns to create designs I haven’t seen on tiles. Symbols and patterns are universal across cultures, and these are designs anyone can enjoy.
Lea-Way Designs began creating art tiles that could be hung on the wall or used as coasters. Several designs inspired home installations for kitchen backsplashes. Over time the line expanded to Two-Way Tile Trays™ which serve a dual purpose: use the tray as a decorative centerpiece or take the tiles out to employ as coasters. These led to coaster sets. With these two product lines, folks can personalize their homes and small spaces. Currently the addition of jewelry–tile bracelets, earrings and necklaces–allows people to express their individual style.
My goal for customers is to create a physical and personal space that resonates and has substance for them.
