My Armenian grandmother taught me to cross stitch when I was young and it bound us. She would cook traditional meals, brew and serve Armenian coffee, followed by a reading of fortunes in the grounds and I would lose myself stitching in the sensory experience she created.
There were many times in my life when I strayed from my grandmother and my sewing, and those times always seemed to correspond with when I was the most unhappy and unhealthy. Several years ago after I lost my home, partner and job; everything I thought was of value to me, I started cross stitching again. Slowly, I began to put my life back together and came back to family traditions. As I completed and gifted cross stitch projects to friends and family I felt as if each finished piece brought me closer to my true self. Seeing people genuinely happy to receive something I created was a very new and incredible feeling. When I see a finished piece being worn or hanging in the home of someone I love, it brings me back to the serenity I felt while creating it. I now have a happy home, work at a local University, and it is my humble wish to bring the feeling of serenity and joy I thrive in to others.
I believe the same knot magic I shared with my grandmother goes into every piece I create, binding me to every creation's recipient in a small way. My spiritual practice is a solitary blend of olde and new rituals. Knot magic through cross stitching is the ritual I am most comfortable sharing with others.
