I have been working with textiles, shapes and color in one form or another since she was very young. She was never comfortable with sewing machines and printed patterns. The patterns were confusing to her. About twenty years ago, at a friend’s urging me to give quilting a try. Convinced I would fail, I nevertheless took a beginner’s quilting class. And “that was all she wrote”. Quilting engaged her love of color and shape. I learned the techniques of traditional quilting but still she struggled with the rules and constraints of commercial patterns.
Beyond that first class I am self taught. I started by modifying patterns, skimming through the instructions along the way and making many mistakes. I didn't know how to fix them and wasn't disinclined to take the work apart and try again. So I just did what I thought would work. Thus the seeds of my current style.
Greatly influenced by artists of the first half of the twentieth century and a select group of master quilters from the early days of the art quilt movement, I found my groove. Now I work with commercial prints, cotton, silk, vintage kimono fabric and many other fabrics and fibers. I especially like using my own hand dyed fabric.
I work intuitively, starting with a palette of color and texture and an idea for design she begins to work intuitively. The process defines the outcome. Although more often than not quite far from my initial design, the end result is a truly unique, one of a kind piece of work.
My work blends traditional craft with contemporary art to create vibrant and engaging art work. In addition I make kitchen and dining linens as well as personal accessories and inspired throw pillows. My work ranges in price, allowing it to be accessible to everyone.
