✨Bio by Nest Artisan Guild for Etsy

I'm Kristi Smith, and my journey has been deeply rooted in the rich landscapes of occupied Yurok, Hupa and Mechoopda land in Northern California. Following the devastating 2018 Paradise Camp Fire, I moved to the Washoe Land in Tahoe. I represent the Yurok, Karuk and Wintun tribes of California and is enrolled with the Yurok Tribe. My artistic journey has been a tribute to my rich indigenous heritage, Especially my great grandma Nettie McKinnon, master weaver as well as other artisans in my family.

My artistic journey began with a profound desire to expand visibility of my family’s traditional artisanal work through online exposure. Yurok Designs and Photography has since evolved to encompass wearable art inspired by traditional basket designs and current Native issues. What I cherish most about my work is the opportunity to share my culture and educate others while producing unique products that allow others to express their heritage in a contemporary way.

My creative process is deeply intuitive, and I only engage with my craft when I'm in a good, balanced place, hoping to pass on positive energy and good medicine through my creations. Nature, especially water and the outdoors, holds a special place in my heart and often serves as my muse. Throughout my journey, I've been fortunate to receive unwavering support from my community, not just my tribe. Traveling to events over the years allowed me to soak in the beauty of various cultures, constantly feeding my desire to learn.

I also identify as disabled, but I don't lead with this information. My creative process ebbs and flows, sometimes dictated by my body's limitations, but my passion consistently triumphs over any challenges.

Throughout my journey I have had hardships, I lead with authenticity in my work and myself, which has opened many doors. I've had the privilege of showcasing my work in various exhibitions, galleries, and events in the hospitality, tourism, and art sector, bringing Native art to a broader audience.

✨ About the Indigenous Artisans Collective

Etsy and Nest are proud to support the Indigenous Artisans Collective within the Etsy Uplift Makers Program, featuring shops from Indigenous makers affiliated with 10 Indigenous groups across the United States and the First Nations of Canada.

Many of the makers practice craft skills that have been inspired by or passed down from family and community mentors. Product collections include meticulously handcrafted home goods, jewelry and other accessories, in honor of the maker’s culture and heritage. Amongst many Indigenous communities, traditional handcraft continues to hold significant cultural value, as well as economic opportunity.

Through the Uplift Makers: Indigenous Artisans Collective, Etsy and Nest are helping to create digital market access and economic opportunities for Indigenous makers while also providing artisans with resources and tools to help run a successful online business. From expert-led digital marketing training, onboarding support, and a custom resource library, the program delivers a comprehensive suite of programming to participants. Additionally, the program addresses key barriers new business owners face such as providing professional photography to capture the creative content needed to showcase their talent and reach new customers in today’s digital era.
