As a librarian (and human being), I love stories. Here's my favorite:

Once there was a little girl who wanted to do everything. She drew pictures before she could talk. She visited Cornwall and decided to become a mermaid. She wanted to step into every travel snapshot, every Escher illustration, every of issue National Geographic. When she saw something beautiful, she taught herself how to make it. She lived at the public library, curled up under study carrels with a stack of books. She made her own trails up the sides of mountains. She sat in trees, watching deer tiptoe below and owls blink sleepily through the morning fog.

When she was young, everyone told her she could do anything. When she grew up, they told her to choose just one thing. In terror, she fled to Morocco, where she spent two glorious years reading stories to kids, seeking the perfect couscous recipe, learning to converse without words or pictures, and discovering--slowly--that she really could choose everything.
