Welcome to the art work of Alaskan artist / illustrator Lucas Elliott.
“The aim of art is not to represent the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance”
-Aristotle
Ever since I was a kid, I have been obsessed with the artistry of storytelling. The use of imagery to tell a story tends to have a significant effect on me. In fact, I often recall an illustration that accompanied a story more easily than the written tale itself. Yet, stories that are told solely though the use of images, well, those I remember better still. There can be a lot said with very little spoken. In my own work, I try to convey this same idea through the use of action and line work.
Originally, my inspiration to create came mostly from children’s books and graphic novels. Growing up in Alaska, I felt a strong connection to Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are (one of my favorite stories). Simply being in Alaska has given me a bit of a different look on the world. I have always been intrigued by the mystery of the tundra and the creatures that lurk out there. While at the same time, like many others who have grown up in a “post-Star Wars” world, I have also been fascinated with all that is Sci-Fi and Geekery. Perhaps I find myself drawn to the broad scope of imagination that these inspirations have to offer. Eventually hope to illustrate and publish a few of my own stories.
After I began my path as an illustrator, my style, and variety of media, has slowly progressed and evolved. I have a strong background in pen and ink work, as well as in painting. More recently, my art has shifted towards digital illustration. I have found myself impressed at seeing what can be accomplished with so many tools at the ready. I hope that you are as well.
