Announcement    With all the e-communications happening these days, it’s always remarkable to me that folks will take the time to send a personal, handwritten card to their friends or family. Getting a card through the mail at any other time besides Christmas is a rarity indeed these days.

There are so many cards on Etsy created with digital design and electronic printing, and most appear very well designed and of high quality. However, it’s refreshing to know that letterpress (with its 500 year history and all mechanical production techniques) is being considered as an option by buyers. Since I’m not an artist to create my own designs, I’m using antique blocks to print my cards and notepads. There are others who do print their own art, created electronically, on the hundred year old equipment. I am hugely in favor of this, because it perpetuates this craft as an art form, and encourages preservation of the equipment. This ensures letterpress will remain “alive and well” moving forward, and will not become a lost art.

I’m producing my cards using TRADITIONAL printing methods, which DOES NOT permit a deep impression into the paper. The modern printing techniques are wonderful paired with the thick, soft paper and polymer plates available now. However, I’m using the original lead type and blocks that we have in our collection, which are easily damaged with excessive impression. I do use a bit more pressure, which results in a slight dimensional appearance on the front and tactile feel on the back side of the paper. I take great care to minimize this impression, ensuring this wonderful collection is preserved.

All my cards are blank inside, so there’s plenty of room to write a personal message.

Thanks again,
Troy
