​OONA Studio is a small product design workshop focused on creating functional and sustainable pieces of design for the environmentally conscious consumer. We are committed to using the highest quality, natural, sustainable and biodegradable materials as well as integrating as much recycled / recyclable materials as possible in all our products in an ongoing effort to raise awareness on the impact our consumption habits have on the environment as well as to offer an alternative to the non-sustainable consumption of resources.

Our products are handcrafted locally, either in our own workshop or in collaboration with small family-owned businesses while the main materials we use are made in the EU, which means they meet strict European fair-trade and wage-regulation standards.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY WITH A SOCIAL IMPACT

At OONA Studio we believe in giving back to the community in ways that support environmental sustainability and minimize our carbon footprint and the negative impact our business may have on the environment, as well as empower the people to change the way they live for the better. With this idea in mind, we entered into a partnership with Trees for the Future, whereby we committed ourselves to donating for the planting of five trees with every product sold. Therefore, with every product you purchase you help provide both food and jobs for thousands of people around the globe that rely on these trees to survive. Simply put, we don't want just to plant trees, we also want to help change lives in this process.

Trees for the Future is an organisation committed to improving the livelihoods of impoverished farmers by revitalising degraded lands. Since 1989 Trees for the Future planted over 127 million trees all over the world and demonstrated the transformative power of trees in helping people break out of the poverty trap while also addressing the global environment. Today, their work in East and West Africa is helping to build a world where people can leave a legacy of opportunity through sustainable practices and productive lands for future generations.

MATERIALS WE WORK WITH

***Cork & Cork fabric***

Cork fabric, or cork leather as it is sometimes called, is a high quality fabric produced from thin cork shavings obtained directly from the bark of the cork oak tree. The cork fabric is also a biodegradable material, produced from renewable resources. The Cork Oak tree grows primarily in Spain, Portugal and France and, unlike other trees, it is the only tree in the world that can be stripped of its bark and not die, thus making the harvesting of cork 100% sustainable. Moreover, it is estimated that every year Cork Oak forests retain up to 14 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, thus reducing the greenhouse effect.

***Pinatex***

Pinatex is natural and sustainable, non-woven textile made from pineapple leaves fibres which are the by-product of the pineapple harvest. Thus no extra land, water, fertilisers or chemicals are utilised in its production. It is a unique and new material that promotes positive social, cultural and environmental impact. Moreover, Pinatex is 100% animal-free, so no animal by-product is used in any stage of the production, which makes it a perfect sustainable and vegan alternative for leather.

***100% natural wool felt***

Wool is a natural fiber harvested from sheep. This natural fiber is a rapidly renewable resource as it is harvested without injuring the animal and is a biodegradable natural material. Domesticated sheep’s wool has evolved to continue growing so shearing is necessary. 100% wool felt is a non-woven textile produced from raw wool fibers that undergo a wet felting process of matting, condensing and pressing. This ancient process involves solely natural ingredients, including sheep’s wool and water. The processing of wool requires very little environmental impact compared to other natural fibers or man-made fibers and, since wool felt is made of sheep’s wool, this means that after the felt product becomes worn out, it can be safely disposed of as it is 100% biodegradable. Moreover, the felt we use in our products is made in Europe, thus satisfying strict production guidelines, and dyed with non-toxic and heavy metal-free dyes, making this product also safe for children.

***Green Cast***

Green Cast is a new generation of environmentally friendly acrylic sheets that is 100% recycled and recyclable. Green Cast sheets are VOC free and are made from acrylic scraps resulting from the production process as well as post-consumer waste. Manufactured in Italy and independently verified and tested by German and Italian universities, the production of this material requires less water consumption and has lower CO2 emissions than virgin acrylic sheets. Moreover, at the end of its lifecycle, the material can be recycled over and over again.
