Etsy's Handmade Blog
A Message for Obama

Barack Obama had been "leading" on Etsy for a while! We've noticed so many artists and crafters pouring their hearts into handmade expressions of grassroots support. Over at flickr, folks are posting their homemade messages for Mr. President Elect. What's your flickr message to Obama?

Nov. 6, 2008 at 9:56 p.m. BluCille

I voted for John McCain, but if Obama was willing to protect and defend the unborn children and he and McCain traded views on the issues I would have been the first to vote for Obama. Hopefully now that Obama is the victor he will realize that a leader does not have to have everyone's support and will keep those who take the lives of unborn children to put a dollar in their pockets away from taxpayers money.

Nov. 7, 2008 at 11:36 a.m. SmartBird

My message to Obama: Congratulations!

My message to the Storque: Stay out of politics. Approximately half of the people who voted went the other way. Are you trying to alienate half of your potential customers?

Nov. 7, 2008 at 11:36 a.m. ManicManx

Etsy, thank you so much for putting this up. Its beautiful. A nice show of support.

Beautiful collection for a wonderful outcome!

Nov. 7, 2008 at 3:32 p.m. NaturalAmber

Congratulations to Obama.

I am concerned with this article. I think its great to congratulate but I do agree with SmartBird that maybe the message in this article may not of been nicely geared against those who supported Mccain. It's important to know there were supporters from both sides, both voicing their opinions. Perhaps this should be edited a little to say Obama has been supported by artists on ETSY, over leading.

Nov. 7, 2008 at 4 p.m. blackmustard

Congrats from Canada!

Nov. 7, 2008 at 4:10 p.m. eviekelley

This is so awesome, I'm only upset I didn't think of it myself- Booties for Barack: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...

Nov. 7, 2008 at 4:24 p.m. fourtailslampwork

I'm with Natural Amber. I was so happy that I can now say PRESIDENT Obama, but there are a lot of people out there who are not. I think it's fantastic that so many people have celebrated what is truly an historical milestone for all of us. However, the impression I got from the page was that ETSY had taken sides. REtailers do it all the time ...in their campaign contributions. In the stores, however, they remain neutral so as not to offend anyone. Had I been a McCain supporter, this page would have made me feel marginalized.

Nov. 7, 2008 at 4:31 p.m. BlackStar

A great message for a great man! Thanks Etsy!

Nov. 7, 2008 at 4:34 p.m. picklevalentine

Barak ~ I hoped you watched "The Waltons" growing up....cause you are driving us there again!! Good-night John-Boy!

Nov. 7, 2008 at 4:52 p.m. mopsical

Thanks to SmartBird, NaturalAmber, and fourtailslampwork; this kind of article does, indeed, make us feel marginalized.
Please don't make Etsy a political statement, Storque; I love this site and this community, but I don't feel nearly as enthusiastic about supporting it when I see something like this.

Nov. 7, 2008 at 5:29 p.m. naKiMuli

I love PRESIDENT Barack Obama and it warms my heart to see how he inspires all...

Nov. 7, 2008 at 6:13 p.m. chiarashandpainted

A new day has emerged with President Elect Obama and I couldn't be happier and more proud to live in the USA!

Nov. 7, 2008 at 6:31 p.m. deliasthompson

Because Etsy is a collective of individually owned shops I find this thread really inappropriate. Etsy should not and cannot speak regarding the politics of it's individual shop owners. As individuals we should support causes that we are moved by but Etsy as it's own entity should not speak for the entire population regarding religion, politics, etc.

Nov. 7, 2008 at 6:36 p.m. HautTotes

I am thrilled to have a new leader and even if you didn't vote for him (which I most certainly did) this nation should stand behind it's new president!

Nov. 7, 2008 at 7:23 p.m. trimgoddess

great GREAT great

Nov. 7, 2008 at 7:29 p.m. bjhissong

I just read that this election is more of a fashion statement than a real political election. Obama wouldn't even answer reporters today when they asked if he was going to raise taxes on the top 5%! I agree with others that going political on this website means that you alienate some of your customers... which by the way, buy things. It's not good business and I did not vote for Obama. I wouldn't support a seller who rubs it in my face... I'm for the unborn rights of human beings...male and female. I wouldn't buy anything from someone like kateBlack who is obviously too young to understand that! Keep politics out of this site... I've seen some very rude t-shirts and I'm a huge supporter of Sarah Palin!

Nov. 7, 2008 at 8:33 p.m. MVKnits

It's not political. The election is over. He will be the president. I understand that McCain supporters are hurting, but complaining about this is like complaining if Lincoln were on the front page.

Nov. 8, 2008 at 12:01 a.m. bjhissong

Obviously you are one of those people who don't understand politics. And guess what... he will have to be elected again in four years. Oh that's right... you don't follow politics.

Nov. 8, 2008 at 12:31 a.m. leblancjoanna

We sure did!

You alienate future business when you share your views on politics. I am really struggling, I absolutely love, love ETSY/ But right now, I am thinking maybe I should take my business elsewhere.

We've noticed many sellers listing Obama items and a flurry of sales related to the election. This post is meant to show the activity of sellers on Etsy, not as an endorsement. Our goal at the Storque is to reflect what's going on in the community. Leading up to the election we displayed a balance of items. Now that Obama has won, the community and admin are showing items that people would like to purchase. If McCain had won, I'm sure we all would have done the same, as an expression of current events.

Nov. 8, 2008 at 8:56 p.m. mogwai

I don't honestly see how they'd be alienating anything. This was posted after the election, meaning Barack Obama has now been chosen as our new president-to-be. Etsy posting this doesn't mean they are promoting Obama or that they are not promoting McCain...there's nothing to promote at this point. Like him or not, he's your president now. (Or well, will be soon enough.) Just give him a chance. You might find you actually like him. :)

Anyway, thank you for pointing me in the direction of the Flickr group. I happily added my own addition yesterday. :)

THANK YOU to bjhissong and mopsical for your comments. I feel the same way.

Barack Obama inspired me to create some typographic designs. They are really not in keeping with Cape Card, but since it's my shop, I can do what I want.
