Crafting a Cure: Breast Cancer Awareness on Etsy

As many of you may have noticed, there are waves of pink on everything from ribbons to tortillas in October. Why? Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual event is dedicated to educating women (and those who love them) about the early signs of breast cancer and prevention. It has grown to celebrate survivors and raise funds for research.

Little fundraisers by scrumptiousdelight, whose mother died of breast cancer

The gentlemen and ladies of the Etsy Plush Team, like so many of you, have been touched by this disease. Mothers, sisters, daughters and friends have all been diagnosed with a disease that can be devastating. I stress the can be. Because of the work done by scientists, doctors, patients and all of us who support them, real progress has been made in the fight against breast cancer. We are at an important crossroads in the medical history of this disease. We are close to the cure. As I write this, Canadian scientists announced they have decoded all three billion letters in the DNA sequence of a metastatic breast cancer tumors: a critical step in understanding both the cause and the cure of breast cancer.

Plush Team member Patti Haskins is my personal hero.  She tells her story much better than I do:

"This January is my sixth anniversary of when I started treatment. I did the whole lumpectomy, chemo, radiation thing. I've had better times. Now, every six months I visit doctors to see how I'm doing — so far, so good. But it is never out of my mind. I always wonder when it will be back. Hopefully, when it rears its ugly head again, there will be a cure, and it will be ‘not a big deal.’ Or maybe there will even be something to take to maintain life and keep the cancer cells from growing. It doesn't cure me, but it lets me live with it. I could handle that, living with arrested cancer. It’s that freewheeling cancer, running rampant through my body that scares me."

Plush deer by FollowtheWhiteRabbit for the Plush Team

It was very easy for the Plush Team to choose the charity for our fall fundraiser: the Susan G. Komen Fund for the Cure.  Because we are a global team, the Komen Fund is a great match for us. They do outreach and raise funds for research projects in countries all over the globe. The Komen Fund also has a very high rating from Guidestar.org. (Guidestar.org is an independent organization that rates non-profit groups to better inform donors on the success of their missions and the accountability of their fundraising.)

We were curious what other teams and Etsians were doing during Awareness month. The SHETeam (Schooling at Home Etsians) has organized an informal fundraising sale. At the end of October, all proceeds from designated items will be donated to a breast cancer charity of their choice. The SHETeam is 85 members strong and a self-proclaimed “G-Rated” Team. Search the Handmade section for “sheteamoct09” for their items.

This cuff is by KimPayne.

Other individual Etsians are motivated to earmark a portion of their sales to breast cancer awareness organizations year round. Jeweler Aimee Golant has created this inspiring brooch symbolizing the power of the feminine spirit. 10% of the proceeds from the sale of the Shin Pin will benefit Sharsheret, a Jewish women's breast cancer organization.

Jeweler LUQ2 has taken her family’s personal struggle and transformed her experiences into this powerful statement of hope. 20% of sales of the Cancer Awareness Bracelet will be sent to Entertainment Industry Foundation's Women's Cancer Programs.

Designer annaaizic has harnessed the healing power of stones in her Majestic Labradorite and Silver necklace. Anna also donates 15% from each sale to Susan G. Komen Fund for the Cure.

Breast cancer also affects the men in our lives. This Pink Ribbon Tie by kjmSILKS is a great way for misters to show their support. 15% of the sale price goes to the Komen Fund.

Celebrate survival and triumph with a Pink Party! I was inspired by paperandcake’s Pink Party for Breast Cancer Awareness Month — Printable Download PDF. What a great idea! This kit contains fun and sophisticated designs for you to decorate in style. And 50% of the sale price goes to the Komen Fund.

So how does a team of plushmakers scattered all over the globe go about launching a project to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness month? In a word: boobs!

Pink Puddings from fakeradish

We wanted to challenge ourselves as makers as well as highlight some of the iconic imagery associated with Breast Cancer Awareness month. So we came up with three themes:  boobs, pink Ribbon and pink.  Team members had a month to come up with items that reflected one of the themes, and I must say, our team created beautiful, funny and fearsome work!

100% of all funds (minus shipping) raised from Breast Cancer Awareness projects sold in the Plush Team shop will be donated to the Komen Fund. We’ve raised over $250.00 so far….and with your help, we hope to raise more! Check some more of our plush items below and in our team shop. Make sure to check the sold listings in our shop because there are some great items you'll get a kick out of!

Oct. 14, 2009 at 12:14 p.m. mellowmymind

As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, I think it's great that independent artists and crafters here on Etsy are supportive of awareness for breast cancer.

However, I would really love to see more support for smaller, independent organizations that are focusing their efforts on the extremely important and under-studied side of breast cancer research: environmental causes.

Please, consider these organizations when making charitable contributions:

- silentspring.org : "Silent Spring Institute builds on a unique partnership of scientists, physicians, public health advocates, and community activists to identify and break the links between the environment and women’s health, especially breast cancer."

- bcaction.org : "In order to stop cancer where it starts, we need to spend as much time and money researching causes as we spend looking for cures."

- thinkbeforeyoupink.org : "launched in 2002 in response to the growing concern about the number of pink ribbon products on the market. The campaign calls for more transparency and accountability by companies that take part in breast cancer fundraising, and encourages consumers to ask critical questions about pink ribbon promotions."

- cosmeticsdatabase.com : "The Environmental Working Group's searchable database of toxic ingredients in cosmetic and personal care products."

I recently just saw the film "No Family History" (nofamilyhistory.org) and it really opened my eyes to a lot of hidden facts about breast cancer and breast cancer research. I highly recommend that anyone who has been personally effected by breast cancer see this film.

Oct. 14, 2009 at 1:23 p.m. JeannineRobertsRoyce

I am celebrating my 14th year of good health after treatment for breast cancer. I am forever on a soapbox to friends and family to take very very good care of yourself. Exercise, eat lots of veggies/fruits and eat consciously, keep stress to a minimum... and this is super important... have your Vitamin D levels checked. One of the strongest pieces of news recently: Low D levels are thought to influence breast cancer.

Someone I know, 37yrs old, had hers checked and they were dangerously low. She had no clue.

Sending my love, hugs, support to anyone who is going through this.

This is great and I have been selling Breast cancer awareness items since I opened in June, with a promo to give a percentage of profits to Breast cancer research.....
But.....sadly, no one has contributed :( by buying a featured item. This is disheartening, considering the number of people affected by this disease. My items have sold well elsewhere (wholesale) for a number of years....Come on etsians and etsain followers.....step up to the plate!

There are many, many talented etsians selling beautiful awareness items. Kudos to all......Autrism on Etsy Team also deserves a mention! Thanks.

Even though October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we all should strive to educate and be educated year round, about the early detection and options regarding breast cancer. Celebrate all those who have survived, support those who are fighting, and remember those who lost the battle.

I'm a bit of an Etsy virgin - only joined a few weeks ago, but am delighted to realise that I am part of something which takes issues close to my heart seriously. Haven't created anything for pink awareness this year, but definitely will do next year.

Thank you etsy and everybody else that supports this cause. I am 33 and currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Unfortunately I have lost my job due to this horrible disease. Since I really liked making my pink ribbon necklaces, that is why I decided to sell them on etsy to help my husband financially. I love etsy!!! Fight like a girl!!!!

Oct. 15, 2009 at 6:42 p.m. wrappedNwarmth

All those are so cute. I'm glad that everyone supports for the cause. I have met a few women who are breast cancer survivers and there stories are always heart breaking and joyful. Because they suffered through the treatments but, in the end became a survivor.

Oct. 15, 2009 at 6:43 p.m. TheWolfBard

It's great to see that other artisans are crafting pink items as well. I haven't been out looking at shops recently so I didn't know if I was the only one. :) Glad to see I'm far from being alone. I have three styles of chainmail bracelets up right now and will be adding more pink items soon with a portion of profits going to breast cancer research!

Oct. 15, 2009 at 7:08 p.m. loveartworks

My grandmother died from breast cancer two and a half years ago. We created a line of jewelry in her honor - the Jane's Hope Collection. We donate profits from this collection to a great breast cancer organization in Houston. For the month of October, we'll donate 100% of the profits from those pieces. Here's the section:

Amazing stories. Breast cancer has touched my life in so many ways. I've made many totes in honor of those who have survived and those who have passed on. You too can show your support.

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...

I've personally made donations to research every year for many years. Whether, I ran my heart out with my mom's friend name "Patty" on my back or recent struggles where I've made totes for charity events.

We all can do something to raise awareness and show our support.

Oct. 15, 2009 at 10:04 p.m. ukcountess

As a survivor ( 3 years now) I apppreciate all the support and awareness programs out there. Personally I sew many reversible chemo caps when I have spare fabric to use up. I then donate them to a local chemo center. I appreciate each and every day I have to enjoy my family. especialyy my 16 month old grandbaby Emma.

Oct. 16, 2009 at 12:01 a.m. lindseyfair

One of my favourite cards I ever made was for a fellow etsian going through reconstruction surgery after her treatments were completed. I wanted something upbeat and fun as she was celebrating getting some 'new girls'. I glued two pieces of brown beach glass to the front of the card, felted a yellow polka dot bikini top and wrote 'Congrats on your new girls'. It totally brightened both our days.

It's been almost two years since then and she happily has it on display in her studio!

Oct. 16, 2009 at 12:16 a.m. meganleone

Oct. 16, 2009 at 3:09 p.m. Emmamaha

I had a cousin, a single mom, who died of it. It struck fast and swiftly and muted her incredibly persistent and vivacious spirit. Important to point out what early detection can do to save lives.

Cancer is an awful disease. My sister-in-law lost her sister this year to breast cancer. She fought long and hard, and like so many cancer victims was a survivor. My heart goes out to everyone facing this terrible disease. My sister-in-law's sister inspired a line of awareness bracelets for her. You can see her bracelets at www.shellysuniquejewelry.etsy.com

I love this!! As a breast cancer survivor I am always in awe of the amount of BC awareness stuff. Sometimes I even feel guilty. But then I figure if we can get enough info on BC & find a cure for it, then they will have a cure for ALL cancers. Thank you so much for helping to promote awareness.

but as an Art teacher I have made scarfs before. Let's pray
