October 24 is International Day of Climate Action!

If you haven't heard already, tomorrow, October 24, 2009, people all over the world are coming together in places as simple as your local park and diverse as the Taj Mahal and the Great Barrier Reef to send a big, loud, important message to world leaders: "Solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis."

In December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to craft a new global treaty on reducing emissions and stemming global warming. People around the world are encouraging their leaders to consider the 350 parts per million test when making this legislation.

Check out this video animation that explains the concept without words. Or you can read (in at least a dozen languages) more at www.350.org to learn why "350" is such an important number.

So hop on your bike, take public transportation, run or walk to an event and show your support for keeping our planet green. It's not too late to make a difference...yet!

Great post. Small changes in your daily domestic routine can have a huge impact, i.e. lower thermostat temp, turning out lights when leaving a room, hanging laundry to dry, hand washing dishes, and not using a microwave. Simple conservation yields a noticeable difference in the electric & heating bills, too!

My work has long been entirely eco friendly using new old stock vintage fabric and recycling the exceptional old, natural fiber pieces.

The Iroquois law of 7 generations is just as true today. In every deliberation, we must consider the impact on the seventh generation... even if it requires having skin as thick as the bark of a pine.

Our leaders and decision makers need to have thick skin here. We need to help them realize that!

Please everyone turn off the light when you leave the room, turn off the water and think before you buy packaged foods, dont drive if you dont have to and recycle. Yes i do sound like your mom! The US is the producer of alot of waste and pollution, even if it is not being produced here it is being produced in companies overseas that are making products for Americans! Trust me you do not NEED another big screen TV!

Okay I'm going to wake y'all up! 350ppm is bogus!

"The Canadian Government statement on carbon dioxide is by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, which advised that "growers should regard CO2 as a nutrient." Studies have shown that plants suffer and die when CO2 falls below 200 parts... per million. The present level is about 380 ppm. Early in the Earth's history, CO2 has been as high as 5,000 ppm. Plant life grew vigorously when levels were between 2,000 and 1,000 ppm."

And here is an enlightening view on the Copenhagen treaty:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMe5dO...

And by the way, I am an environmentalist- what these people are touting is not accurate.

And I am ashamed of Etsy for posting this!

Even though it's important to elect leaders who are likely to 'get it', this really comes down to each one of us. I am constantly looking at what I consume, especially packaging, and trying to get my business to have a smaller and smaller footprint. It's being aware, and when you can, making small changes.

Oct. 23, 2009 at 2:53 p.m. OneClayBead

I am happy to sell on a venue that supports this type of awareness! Green energy is the frontier- the only path where living beings have a future, and I want to be a part of making that happen, by educating myself and making the lifestyle changes that need to be made.

It is our generation who is already seeing the catastrophes taking place (more cyclones/floods/droughts/unusual migrations/extinctions taking place)
and it is our generation and the ones after us (yes SewnNatural 7 generations down) who must now individually act to ensure things do not get any worse than they already are.
Conserve energy (walk, cycle) and conserve products (use all your clothes in your wardrobe), consume less (buy only what you truly need and will use) and produce less waste (think before buying that product wrapped in bags and wrapping - such as bananas! or apples or chips or cookies!!) and remember to re-use (and re-use and re-use...) and then to re-cycle and to gift your unbroken wares.
Excellent article - thanks etsy! this is what crafting and making do is all about - individuals standing up and making a change and together we can make the biggest change needed without, hopefully, seeing the environment make that sad big change (with or without any countries govermental support).
It all depends on You :)

Glad to see some press on the climate issue here on ETSY. As a fellow research scientist working on the global oceans, I'm happy to participate in a local event in Maine to raise awareness of ocean acidification due to increasing CO2 levels. Please come out and hear what other oceanographers have to say about this issue:

Conservation is a good thing for our local enviroment, will save you $$ on your energy bills and keep your own piece of this earth looking nice, but globally our earth has been changing for millions of years, after all the egyptians built the pyramids in the mist of a lush tropical forest. I guess all those gas sucking SUV,s they were driving around in how many thousands of years ago, changed their climate around. just the normal cycles of our great planet we call earth.....

Thanks for sharing. Can you believe that a local resident was against wind power because the windmill would be ugly to look at! Ignorance is ugly!

Oct. 28, 2009 at 5:06 p.m. 2crafty4u

I don't beleive in the climate control hoax. Yes, we can cut down on few activities to help, but in the long run the earth will continue the cycle it has always been going through. Therefore the earth will be going through cold and hot or in between spells and there isn't anything we can do stop these cycles. And when we are long gone the earth will still be going through these cycles. Doesn't anyone remember learning this in sixth grade or junior high school or high school.

Everyone have a good day and do one thing that will cool this planet down. Me, I am not going to get all hot and bothered by the global warming/climate change hoax.

Basing one's fashion and artistic practice on such a fundamental misunderstanding of the natural world is odd to me...I wish the world would be as eager to consume the eco-science as they were the eco-fashion.
