I think the key here, as with anything else, is knowledge. The more informed a consumer you are, the more likely you are to make wise choices. I watched a documentary a few months back on PBS, called China Blue, that did undercover research into the actual conditions in some blue jean factories in China. Just having those images in the back of my head while I'm out at someplace like Target helps to keep me from buying things I might have a few years ago.

It's a delicate balance... it's easy to say, oh because this is handmade or made from recycled or eco-friendly materials it's okay. And yes, it IS a million times better than something mass-produced, but even then there's still a limit to how much stuff one person can need or even WANT.

Thanks for this article. I've been thinking about how the DIY craft trend and the resurgence of knitting are fitting in with our society's tendency for materialism. Although this may sound negative, what I read on many blogs is a seemingly justified re-enforcement of materialism. There's a lot of "Oh, it's so cute, I must have it." Although I prefer and enjoy buying from the maker, one has to wonder the 'ecological footprint' of buying something from another continent. True, you can focus on buying from your area, but many sites like Etsy are helping to buy internationally. Both good and bad. Good because you get to appreciate international talent. Anyway, it's something I am working through.

Well... I was excited until I read the part about it being in June! I know the storque is new, but having a story announcing an event that happened 3 months ago on the front page of a section only makes us wish that we had heard about it sooner. It seems more logical to post a story about how the meeting WENT. Just my take...

Excellent article! I'm a big fan of using as much repurposed stuff as I can--if nothing else, trying to prolong the lifecycle of an item in a useful way.

(To add on to what SweetyPrize mentioned, other terms that I have used and seen used for tags are repurposed and recycled.)

Oh, one thing we just did at my home (if you are in the New England Area) you can switch your electric service from NStar or Nat. Grid to pull your own electrical service from only solar and wind sources - The program is called New England GreenStart and it only costs a few dollars more a month than our typical electric bill! (Just think if everyone did this?)

Very cool idea with the crayons. My dad used to melt my broken crayons and add them to sawdust to make wood stove fire starters. My aunt used to put a candle in a tall glass bottle, and hold a crayon in the lit flame so the wax would drip down the bottle. Eventually the drips covered the bottle and made for a very interesting piece of crayon art.

That's absolutely fantastic! Kudos to the Metal Street Team and IFAW. Canada's annual seal hunt is one of the most tragic events... Articles I've read have stated that post-mortems of the dead seal young showed many of them were probably still alive while being skinned, and that many had been killed with several heavy blows. Few of the victims had had the test to determine if they were dead.

Seals' eyes do not respond in death the way other animals' do, so you cannot always be sure an animal is actually dead, prior to taking off it's pelt.

This is incredibly inhumane, as is the huge number of killings and the fact that they are only pups!

I bow to your great compassion. Should you have a similar event, please convo me.

How awesome to read about you and your children. :) I love the Hugbabies! My first job (!!) was working as a physical therapy assistant for two of the sweetest little boys I have ever met, twins who have autism. What an amazing experience being able to work with them and their equally amazing family was. They definitely are not what people think of as "typically" autistic, and are very outgoing and friendly, extremely loving. Best of luck with your shop and lots of love to you and your family. :)

excellent article and I can relate to your experience having an adult son with autism..he is an excellent artist and a great many people challenged with autism have amazing artistic talent. 2 of my son's drawings are in my shop under Noah Erenberg's art. I am trying to interest an art's program ... Alpha Resource Center ..in Santa Barbara, CA. to open a shop for their clients with developmental disabilities on etsy. Wonderful work comes out of the program and they could use some international exposure. Thanks for bring attention to the issue of autism which affects so many of us!

Thanks so much for posting this article...it really makes me happy to see it! I have a twin sister who's autistic, so while I don't know what it's like to have children that are, I do know what it's like to love and care for someone who is. I've spent my life (I'm 24!) wishing people would understand and while it's a sad thing that the autism statistics are what they are, at the same time autism is heard of, & at least partially known about. It's all happened so quickly it seems like. It seemed like nobody knew what that meant when I was little...or even until the last few years.

My sister's a wonderful, vibrant person & I'm sure your kids will be the same! Thanks soo much for writing this article!
