Our Thoughts and Gratitude Go Out to Veterans

With the backdrop of two active wars and the recent tragedy at Fort Hood, our hearts, thanks, prayers, and sadly our condolences, go out to those in the military and their families this Veterans Day.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new holiday honored World War I veterans. After both World War II and the Korean War, Congress — at the urging of the veterans service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans" and November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

This is also a time to honor those who have fought for freedom in other parts of the world. One of the most significant symbols of this is the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which occurred two days ago, on November 9.

While peace is still a distant goal for the world as a whole, we are very fortunate to have the freedom we enjoy and the protection of those who make sacrifices every day.

I love reading the STORQUE posts and perusing the products listed but I am surprised today that there isn't a vintage flag shown....(and not just because i sell them) There isn't any better way to acknowledge this day then to have a FLAG flown on Veterans Day and always.

Nov. 11, 2009 at 11:11 a.m. FableBay

it's good to remember what this day is about, thank a soldier today. I'm off to call my little brothers. 24 and 26, both veterans, and completely deserving of my thanks.

Nov. 11, 2009 at 11:27 a.m. ChrissyWatson

My sister is in Hawaii at her first station with the United State Navy. I am so proud of her! Thank you veterans!

Nov. 11, 2009 at 11:28 a.m. treacletoffee

Thanks for the Storque article. 11th November is a day for remembrance in many countries as well as the United States, though we don't have it as a national holiday here. We had Poppy Day here in the UK on Sunday to commemorate those who have fought for peace since WWI.

Nov. 11, 2009 at 11:32 a.m. jenharruff

Thank you so much for featuring both of my fantastic teams! I wanted to say thank you to all of the veterans for providing the freedom of a great country and for your many, many sacrifices. And thank you to the families, too. Being raised in the military and being married to the military is something I never take for granted.

Thank you to all the Vets. 2 great organizations to donate to:
1. The USO accepts books donations within the US
2.Books For Soldiers (that's not just about books but some just want letters, candy, mags, etc) to soldiers all over the world and you don't have to pay pricey ship prices (see below).
At BooksforSoldiers dot com, you just download an application to join (all the application has on it is to fill out your name/address/phone - real cinchy. Then you take it to your bank to be notarized - to prove you're you for security purposes.
Like a week later, Books For Soldiers allows you to have a password, and then you're allowed to get into the site and see all the soldiers requests from all over the world. Some don't just ask for books but for magazines, candy, etc. Some want stuffed animals to donate to local kids. All Books For Soldiers donations that go worldwide, first ship to their US base so you're only paying to ship within the US even though the package goes to Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere.
And tell the postal clerk you want to ship Media Mail so you get the cheap book rate that's half the price!
Many soldiers send thank u notes - they're very appreciative.

Thank you to all who have served our great nation!

Nov. 11, 2009 at 11:59 a.m. JoyandWhimsy

The USO and Books For Soldiers need donations.
Booksforsoldiers dot com - they dont' just want books but candy, letters, magazines etc. BooksforSoldiers has a form to fill out (just your name/address) then go to your bank to notarize it. Then you mail it to them and your in the club to help. Mailing books overseas is not expensive b/c all shipments go to a US base 1st so you only pay for domestic shipping - and if you ask to send it MEDIA MAIL for books - it's 1/2 the price. Great org!

Here in Canada, we mark November 11th as Remembrance Day. We wear poppies like those which dotted the WWI battlefields immortalized in Lt.-Col John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields".

Nov. 11, 2009 at 1:01 p.m. ornamentsbydeb

Thanks so much for featuring my "Until You Return" ornament. I designed it and made them for my family last year and we left them hanging until my nephew came home from Afghanistan. My niece asked me to make them to sell to other military Moms. Her son will be going back to Afghanistan again in April!

I am offering free shipping for either of my designs through Friday and $3.00 from each sale goes to a soldier charity.

God Bless all of our soldiers - past and present, including my Dad (God Bless his soul) in WWII and my brother in Vietnam! Because of their sacrifices, we are free!

Thanks SO much for this article!

This is a great article and I think a lot of people often forget the story behind Veterans Day. It’s turned into such a commercial shopping holiday and it’s so very important that we never forget to acknowledge it’s real purpose. Everyone should take time today to thank our soldiers both past and present for fighting for our country and protecting our freedom.

The recent tragedy at Fort Hood is so unfortunate and I pray for the family and friends that lost a loved one. It’s crazy what the war can do to some people and it’s also very sad. I was on Facebook today and actually came across an ad for a site called Prescription Audio that’s offering a free download of their PTSD audio therapy for those in the military. This is something that I hope they’re marketing well because I have friends in the military suffering from this very disease and will be sure to pass it along. If you know of anyone that could benefit from this as well here’s the link: http://www.prescriptionaudio.com/page...
