I just love seeing what folks are collecting. I guess I feel it tells us just a little bit about what inspires them, what they love, and what they choose to surround themselves with in their homes. Today I'm delighted to present the next installment in an ongoing series here on The Storque: The Collectors. First presented on my own little blog, the rikrak studio, it's 11 and a half quick questions with a wonderful artist on what they're collecting (apart from their art supplies!). Hope you'll just love this fabulous and vibrant bird collection with the talented themefragrance.
What a wonderful time of year! Sunshiney warm afternoons, beloved sweater-weather evenings, and the vivid colors of summer transforming into those sumptuous autumn hues. For me, it’s nature at its loveliest!
This is also the time in the calendar when I look for ways to bring the outdoors indoors, something I know so many of us universally love about interior design. As we cozy up our homes and indoor spaces, this month’s gorgeous bird collection brings the joy of the vibrant woodlands and the spirit of natural history alive inside. Here’s a wonderful collection interview to inspire us.

Who (are you?): Elizabeth of themefragrance
What (are you collecting?): Bird objects
When (did you start?): Five years ago
How (many do you have?): Lost count!
Where (do you find them?): Antique stores, gifts, Etsy.
Where (do you keep them?): I live in an old brick house in Brooklyn that has six mantelpieces, and I rotate all my collections on them.
What (piece would you like to add?): Bird prints from Etsy shops (so far I’ve collected prints by geninne and mincingmockingbird)
.
Why (do you love them?): You can't have too many! The variety keeps you going!
Which (one is your favorite?): My lovebird, Buddha (the real one).
What (else do you collect): Antique doll parts, typography blocks, hands, old magazines, perfume bottles, postcards, children’s books.

Like the modern perfumer she is, I love the way Elizabeth’s collection so aptly mixes design and modern handicraft with the natural world. Aren’t the rich and variegated hues of these lovely birds just gorgeous atop the classic white mantles of her brick home? Elizabeth’s brilliant use of color and hand-picked historical elements brings nature indoors not only with her beloved bird collection, but also in her delightfully vibrant shop. Like the splashes of antique history in her collection, Elizabeth’s work builds on the traditional to craft fresh, modern perfumes with enticing organic scents. I just adore her integration of nature in her collections, both in her home and in her shop. Thanks so much for sharing with us, Elizabeth!
What do you collect? I’d love to hear! Please post in the comments below!
And have a most colorful, vivid day, nicies!

I am LOVING all those pictures of the bird collections.. time to start working on my own :)

I started as a collector and am still a collector first and foremost. Nice collection there.
Education to collecting is key. Once upon a time parents encouraged collecting to their children. It needs to be a big thing again.
Doesn't have to be expensive. I started collecting post cards at 8 and TV guides.
My brother collected marbles.
With time the collection will grow and the fun is finding the new find.
I would like to see collector clubs started on Etsy.
This is a start. I am so happy to see this series.
Collector forever, antique dealer since 1996 and online since 2002. I have seen so many unique collections but am always still amazed.

Nice collection!
I collect lots, but my faves right now are birds, nests (abandoned or blown out of trees), apothecary jars, white and aqua pottery, and antique pincushions.

oh this is such a special article-I really needed this right now. I became a bird lover a few years ago, began to design and build my own bird feeders, and from that began collecting old and vintage traffic lenses making bird feeders out of them-all my loves wrapped up in one-love of the primary colors red, yellow and blue; love of birds; and love of the environment through providing feeders of upcycled materials and donating to conservation groups I admire. So that is my most recent collecting, but have been a lifelong collector of a variety of things. thanks again for this lovely article.
redyellowandblueink
oh ya-JoyandWhimsy, I just looked at your goldfinches-sooo sweet.

I collect: vintage star wars, thimbles, yarn....

googoolee (above) I think we've been spammed....oh my.
Great piece. I'm a total collector! I collect vintage beaded purses, but only in white. My husband collects vintage flashlights, he must have 40+ and growing... I have a bunch of other stuff, like vintage sewing items. All in storage, which we get to go through soon. I am so excited. It's the curse of going from a 1,300 sq ft home to a 650 sq ft!
HandKnitHugs
Such a wonderful thing to collect, beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing.
shavingkitsuppplies
So in love with the gorgeous TTV photographs...the mood they evoke just perfectly captures the quirky charm of the collection. Great job!
momerath
Lovely. What a collection! My grandmother would love those.
I collect women's passports. Only those from the 1950s and earlier, and only ones with photographs. My own passport has always been a prized possession; it represents freedom, possibility, adventure. It's intriguing to hold in my hands something that another woman kept close to her, something that brought her through an adventure. I like imagining why these women were traveling at a time when women weren't "supposed" to go gallivanting about, certainly not alone. Their passports give tantalizing hints.
hellobrowneyes
aww I love this. I have so so many owls and birds that I've collected over the years from different antique shops and flea markets. There's just something about them that makes me feel so happy.

What a great idea for a new series! I always love seeing what people collect and how they display it.
This collection is really nice but the way she has curated and displayed it is exceptionally good. It's like a textbook on how to display your collection the right way!
Sometimes people scatter their items too widely around the house and it loses impact, other times they are too cluttered on a dusty shelf and you can't see individual pieces. Many times people have good collections but bad displays. This collection is displayed just perfectly- the items are elevated on different levels to make it more dynamic, they are grouped in a way that adds impact but still lets you see and admire each individual piece. The background is clean and neutral. Everything just POPS! I am about to start decorating my mantel for Halloween, and this is really inspirational for how to arrange & display things. These principles of curation will work for many different types of collections.
I can't wait for the upcoming articles in this series!
chakrapennywhistle
Oh! I love your collection! I also collect children's books. Mostly block printed and Maira Kalman who is also a New Yorker :)

I've collected lots of things over the years; roosters at one time.
As I look around my home, I see a definite trend. I prefer things with character & I love nautical.

What a cool collection. It is like the chic version of my grandparents creepy owl collection that stares down from the mantle with their creepy eyes every Christmas.
feltmeupdesigns

As you can see, my avatar reflects my own love of birds...and I enjoy collecting them in all forms! Walk through my kitchen and you'll spot wicker circles with wooden chicken heads in three sizes (weird but so cute), a rooster on top of my cupboard that I carried home on the plane from Costa Rica (metal and so colorful), and of course, my little cardboard hummingbird given to me by my youngest daughter so many years ago, it seems. Thanks for this opportunity to reflect on my love of birds.
5gardenias

I collect rabbits and hares of all sorts, little plastic highly detailed farm and zoo animals at 1/32nd scale, paper scraps of amazing images in my 12 A3 scrap books(kind of like making etsy treasuries before etsy was born!) and a cornucopia of choice porcelain pieces, amazing little treasures of animals and rather alot of other bits and pieces which all have their own rather small storage boxes. Most of my treasures are on display and my 'kitchen' has 6 glass cabinets filled with them amidst 2 plates, 2 forks, 2 knives and 2 bowls! whew!
