Get the Look: Anne of Green Gables

Growing up, Anne Shirley (remember, that's Anne with an "e") was my literary hero. Lost in her romantic imagination, and with tendencies for the verbose, Anne was just the kind of company I was seeking. These days, I find myself drawn back to Anne in new ways: namely, puffed sleeves, floral dresses, and carpet bags. These Edwardian and prairie finds are unapologetically feminine, sure to intrigue the Gilbert Blythe in your life. Try incorporating nostalgic elements into a modern ensemble to keep Anne's look fresh and, as she would say, "sublime."

Daphne Pinafore Dress

The pinafore was Anne's iconic look. This polka dot one by bettybridge is perfect for daydreaming in Sunday school. Out the window just might be a Lake of Shining Waters, full of splendid possibilities.

By bettybridge, $385.

Vintage Carpet Bag - Tapestry Tote

When Matthew Cuthbert shows up at the train station, expecting a boy from the orphanage, he's met by spunky Anne Shirley instead. Anne's carpetbag holds all of her "wordly goods," perhaps yours will just hold the essentials.

From fishlegs, $19.

Vintage Brown Pointy Toe Booties

These sweet booties would be perfect for traipsing through apple orchards, exploring the icy-cold spring, dancing over the wooded hill, and of course, stamping one's feet stubbornly when called skinny, ugly, freckled, and redheaded.

From nstylevintage, $41.

Hand Dyed Silk Ribbons

When Gilbert tugs at one of Anne's long red braids and taunts, "Carrots! Carrots!", Anne is quick to crack her slate down on his head. Perhaps if she tied these pretty hand-dyed silk ribbons in her hair, she would be more confident in the color of her tresses.

By MaryNotMartha, $13.50.

Vintage straw boater hat

Always with visions of ribbons and flowers, Anne picks fresh roses and buttercups to adorn her straw hat. I think she would find this one from misscedar lovely with or without the embellishment.

From misscedar, $39.

Flower Garden Blouse - Vintage S

Anne dreams, prays, and pleads for puffed sleeves. Defy the plain and sober by adding some volume to your shoulders. I pair my puffed sleeves with high-waisted skirts for a contrast in silhouette.

From kirbyvintage, $29.

Round Brass Locket

A gold-toned locket was all Anne needed for finery. I love the simplicity of roundabout's version; I would get one for me and one for my bosom friend.

By roundabout, $16.

Vintage Sweet Floral Half Apron

Having company over for tea? This floral apron will keep you tidy and proper. Just make sure to cover the plum pudding sauce. You wouldn't want to find a drowned mouse in there come morning.

From adVintagous, $18.

Beautiful Gunne Sax Wedding Dress with Ruffles

Diana convinces Anne to wear the white organdy to the hotel concert. "It's so soft and frilly and clinging," she encourages. There are numerous Gunne Sax dresses in the Vintage Category that would certainly catch Gilbert's eye from across the room. The delicate lace, when layered, looks just divine.

From violetfolklore, $84.

The Anne of Green Gables books are wonderful. I remember the cherry cordial scenes vividly. Oh, and to have a kindred spirit like Gilbert Blythe! What a charmer.

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:07 p.m. mermaidclaire

Best. Post. Ever.

I could go on and on about my favorite Anne moments but you addressed them all! Amazing finds and SO Anne. Embarrassing story alert: in the books, Anne was vain about her nose. Well, in the movie, actress Megan Follows had a snub-nose. So I used to walk around pressing my nose against things, pig-style, so it would snub more. And I think it actually stuck that way.

I need to plan a vacation to P.E.I.!! Anyway, 11-year-old me thanks you from the bottom of her heart.

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:08 p.m. ambergoulet

Anne, I was so surprised! I loved her growing up. :)

I think the brass locket is a nice modern tie into that image, and the pinafore dress feels modern as well. :)

Fun!

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:08 p.m. spacejam

so beautiful!

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:09 p.m. LaveMeSoapCo

this is like a fairytale!

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:10 p.m. vintagebutterfly94

I wanted to be Anne so badly, I dyed my hair. It didn't turn green, but it didn't turn a beautiful shade of auburn either....

My sisters and I used to recite entire chapters.

Wonderful post.

MermaidClare; that's hilarious about the snub-nose!!

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:26 p.m. worksofwhimsy

My daughter is "Anne with an e" so I have a soft spot for anything relating to Anne of GG.

Perhaps you should have included some vintage books in this feature too. I'm sure Anne Shirley would have approved.

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:29 p.m. PipocaHandmade

Fantastic post! I love the little red-head image! Anne Shirley rocks!

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:34 p.m. burntmill

I so love Anne of Green Gables when I was little

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:36 p.m. Simplamatica

Puffed sleeves so big you have to walk through the door sideways. LM Montgomery was my favorite author!

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:37 p.m. thescripterie

Anne grew on me over the years -- organically, you might say -- until I found that the passages I remember most vividly were from the books about her!

It's always difficult to find tangible goods that match the way you expected them to look in your mind's eye, but Etsy is the perfect place to find things from the imagination springing to life -- this post is proof.

Sept. 10, 2009 at 2:40 p.m. KnotOriginal

Sept. 10, 2009 at 5:48 p.m. sessiejune

When I was in middle school, all I wanted was red hair because of Anne (even though she hated her hair color)! My mom introduced me to the books. We would snuggle in her bed and she would read the stories to me with her great story-telling voice! How could you not fall in love with all of the characters! I can't wait to introduce my own daughter when she is old enough! Great article!

REmember there was also an actress who played Anne Shirley in the "Anne of Green Gables" movie and then took on the pseudonym of Anne Shirley during the 1930s. She was an actress signed on by RKO studios.

Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea were my favorites! I love the romance between the self determined Anne and the sweet Gil. That dress by VioletFolklore channels the Anne as a grown woman theme perfectly!

Sept. 11, 2009 at 11:36 a.m. sweetb

In our family we literally lived this Prince Edward Island Life while my daughters were young even serving cordial(grape juice) in cut glass tumblers, and little brother (the servant) bringing in warm water to pour into a bowl for guests to "freshen up " with.

One more thing Anne of GG was one of my all time favs growing up. She sounded like such a cool girl I wanted to be her friend!

Sept. 11, 2009 at 4:27 p.m. petalbelles

I was just looking over the Anne of Green Gables DVD at the library yesterday and was reminded of how, as a 7th grader, this was the most romantic movie I had ever seen. One thing I'd add to the picks is a big, 'ol honkin' cameo pendant like this beautiful one by ZXETHREE

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...

Thanks for the article, Michelle.

P.S. Personally, I think Anne should have ended up with the older guy instead of Gilbert. And is it just me or does Megan Follows'(who played Anne) hair get bigger and bigger with each movie?

Sept. 11, 2009 at 5:20 p.m. MeandMatilda

Love it. I was/am an Anne of GG fan too. Even named my beloved dog after Gilbert.I used to imagine myself as Anne with all her spunk and red hair. Had the red hair and a dog (not a man) named Gilbert that was as close as I got.

SmallEarthVintage- I love Little House on the Prairie too. I watch re-runs in my studio while I work. My son recently discovered the books.

Sept. 11, 2009 at 6:01 p.m. MeadowbelleMarket

Another Anne (with an "e") fan, here! Time to check out the books & movies again! Ahh, the memories.

Anne of Green Gables was one of my favorites as a kid although now I can't even remember what the book was about. Well I like the vintage suitcases and the old fashioned wedding dress! :)

It's heartwarming to see all the people that have a shared fondness for ann with an 'e' !! there's more kindred spirits around than I knew. I have recently shared the story with my own children,...and the tale of Anne shirley lives on.

Oh dear heaven almighty!

As a redhead, Anne was my heroine. On my wedding day I felt like i had Anne of Green Gables hair & was Sooo giddy!

I just watched Anne of Green Gables today. The husband was at the football and I had the house to myself (yay!). The movie makes me cry every time but it renewed my love for all things puff sleeves and doing my hair up in a bun.

I love this collection. I used to watch Anne of Green Gables on tv all the time. I adore the imagery in that movie!

Great article, all that was missing was a little of Marilla's
raspberry cordial. :> If one hasn't been to PEI, Go!

Oh, this made me so happy! I grew up with Anne with an E as well, and was always so very enchanted by her puffed sleeves, braids, pinafores, and of course, that wonderful carpet bag. Thank you for including my blouse - it is an honour!
