I am a third generation Irish Artist and have been painting in watercolours for over 30 years. I love to work in a loose impressionist style and add details with splashes of colour.
My watercolour box comes with me everywhere I go, and I sketch 'en plein air' in all weathers. The scenes I paint are loose and atmospheric. I sometimes frame these just the way they are, but usually I do more careful studies back in my studio, which are presented here for sale, with a simple matt in a crystal clear sleeve.
If you'd like to know a little more about my process of working and also about the places I paint in Ireland, please go over to my Irish Scenes blog at http://www.irishscenes.wordpress.com
A little more background information:
I have exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy Summer Show in Ireland and the Mall Galleries in London as part of the exhibiting contestants for the Channel 4 Programme, “Watercolour Challenge.
In 2000 I moved to India with my family for 7 years, painting a series of exhibitions of Indian Women and held several solo shows, as well as teaching in two international schools. I sorely missed my soft Irish landscapes, but took the opportunity to paint the intense colours of India through depicting its lovely sari-clad women. This in itself led to an explosion of colour, texture and pattern in my work which resulted in some unique still life paintings. You can see these over on my website http://www.katebedell.com.
I also like to work on literary themes and add pieces of poetry and prose to the paintings which are done on archival watercolour paper. The Joycean paintings have excerpts from the novels and are interlaced with the painting on printed pieces of mulberry silk tissue. The translucent paper allows the colours of the paintings to show through. Sunflowers have been my signature theme for a long time, but I also paint still life, flowers, landscape, nudes and themes from Celtic mythology.
I am a member of the Watercolour Society of Ireland, The Dublin Painting and Sketching Club, The Ulster Watercolour Society, and the Ulster Society of Women Artists and have won several awards within these societies for my work.
