Frequently asked questions

Are your products suitable for people with sensitive skin?

Yes, our products are designed to be as gentle as possible, while still being effective. We don't use any fragrances or preservatives as these can trigger allergies. However everyone's skin is different, and it's possible to have a reaction to the most natural products, so you should always patch test a new product first and discontinue use if any irritation occurs.

How should I store my botanical oils and salves?

We package all our oils and salves in amber glass bottles and jars to protect the goodness inside. Glass doesn't leach like plastics can, and it's recyclable when you've used up all that goodness. We store our products in a cool, dark place, and never in direct sunlight. Your products will love you back if you do the same.

Do botanical oils and salves have a use by date?

Our products are 100% natural with no artificial preservatives. For this reason, we generally put a best-before-date in the listing information, but if we haven't our botanicals will be at their best for 12 months after purchase.

How do you package your products?

We do our best to package all products in eco-friendly, protective wrapping, that is not making it's first trip through the post. It's not always beautiful but we think it's what's inside that counts. We recycle and reuse packaging whenever possible, with the primary priority of making sure your products arrive in good condition. When our packaging does involve plastic bubble-wrap to ensure the safe arrival of your products, we can guarantee that it's not it's first trip through the post. Soft plastics, like bubble wrap can be recycled through large supermarkets and some local council recycling schemes.

How much of your product will I need to use?

That really depends. Each person is different, and our skin and hair are all different. Yours might be more or less thirsty than mine. We always suggest starting with less and adding more as needed. We sell our products in small bottles so that they when you use them they're freshly made and high quality, and they retain that quality for the duration of your use.

Why is my balm liquid?

Our balms, salves and hair butters are made with 100% natural ingredients, without fillers or stabilisers of any kind. This means they respond to the temperature around them, by melting or getting firmer. If your product is more liquid than it should be, mix it with a clean fork and then pop it back in the fridge to harden. If you live somewhere over 25 degrees celsius, you might want to leave your product in the fridge. If your product has become grainy you can either a) use it and love it just the way it is, the graininess won't change how effective the product is or b) stand it in a bowl of hot water until it is melted through, mix well and pop in the fridge to firm up.

Are your products suitable for people with allergies?

That depends on what you're allergic to. I'm happy to discuss and make customised products to cater to your situation. Convo me and we'll see what we can do.

Anything else I should know about your products?

Our products are hand-blended from high-quality natural botanical products. We use organic, wild-crafted and sustainably-grown products whenever possible. However just because something is natural doesn't mean it is automatically safe for everyone. Different people are, well, different, and people can and do have reactions to pure natural products. We recommend patch testing all new products, and discontinuing use if any reaction occurs.

Are your products vegan? What's Tallow? Why do you use it?

Some of our products are vegan. If they are vegan they will say Vegan in the description. If they are not vegan they contain Honey, Beeswax, or Tallow.

Whilst we are not vegan, we take animal welfare seriously and treat all animals in our care well. This includes the bees that make the honey and beeswax we use. And the pastured sheep that we slaughter for our families meat, which the tallow is a byproduct of.

All our animals are treated kindly while they're with us, and when the time comes, hand-slaughtered in line with the Sunnahs. They don't see the knife, blood or other animals die, they spend their final moments under a tree, not in an abattoir.

Tallow is rendered fat. It makes really great soap, and is a by-product of eating meat

What does Saponified mean?

Saponified means oil or fat has undergone a chemical reaction with lye, and become soap. The lye is an essential component in the process of making soap, but no lye remains in the soap once it the saponification process is complete.
