The "Bess" 1770s Cap Pattern from Virgil's Fine Goods is appropriate for approximately the late 1760s–1780s and is based off of original images and drawings of the middling and lower classes. As it is a simple style, this cap features a smaller caul—most suitable for smaller hairstyles or to perch atop a large one—and one whip-gathered ruffle around the face. Bess is a great basic cap when made of a simple linen for middle-lower sorts or of a finer fabric for 1769–1775 upper class impressions.

The pattern instructions are for hand-stitched construction, as studied in period originals. Techniques explained include rolled hems, whip-rolled gathers, and the butted whipstitch seam. The amount of fabric needed for this make is approximately 15" x 45" (0.4m x 106cm) or one half yard (0.4m) of a light but crisp cotton, linen, or silk.
