ABOUT THE ARTWORK: The painting depicts a young girl standing on the threshold of adolescence. She is seen sitting on the edge of a bed with her hands clasped in her lap and a somewhat pensive expression on her face. The room is dimly lit, and the atmosphere is somewhat somber, adding to the emotional intensity of the scene. The girl's body language and the overall mood of the painting evoke a sense of vulnerability, anxiety, and the complex emotions associated with the transition from childhood to adulthood. Munch's distinctive style, characterized by his use of bold colors and expressive brushwork, contributes to the painting's emotional impact. "Puberty" is often interpreted as a reflection on the themes of innocence, sexuality, and the tumultuous journey of growing up. It's considered one of Munch's important works, showcasing his ability to capture the psychological and emotional dimensions of human experiences.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Edvard Munch | Norwegian | 1863 - 1944
Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream, has become one of the iconic images of world art.
His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'). From this emerged his distinctive style.
