First we will go over the proper sounds of each Rune. Please note these Runes were used from a virtual keyboard, you will notice that some of the Elder Futhark Runes do not look accurate.

ᚢ - URUZ "Ooorooz" - Letter U - pronounce the U as in "food"

ᚦ - THURISAZ - "Thoor-eee-saz" - Letter TH - can be pronounced TUH or TH as in the word "the"

ᚨ - ANSUZ - "Awn-sooz" - Letter A - pronounce the A is in "fawn"

ᚱ - RAIDHO - "rye-d-ho" - Letter R rolled

ᚲ - KENAZ - "kay-nawz" - Letter K

ᚷ - GEBO - "Gay-bo" - Letter G

ᚹ - Wunjo - "Woon-yo" - Letter W and V interchanged

ᚻ - HAGALAZ - "Hawg-ah-laz" - Letter H

ᚾ - NAUTHIZ - "Now-theez" - Letter N

ᛁ - ISA - "eee-sah" - Letter I - Pronounce I as the E in the word "WE" - NOT a traditional English letter I!

ᛜ - INGUZ - "Ing-ooz" - Letter NG - used as the NG in the word "thing" DO NOT use Nauthiz and Gebo to form "NG" sound

ᛞ - DAGAZ - "Dah-gaz" - Letter D

ᛟ - OTHALA - "Oh-thala" - Letter O as in the word "home"


OTHER THINGS TO NOTE!

To be as phonetically accurate as possible, SILENT letters, which are common in the English language - are NOT used when transcribing into Runes. This is because each Runic letter is accounted for phonetically (sound).

So let us take the word "PHONE". We would use the Runes "Fehu Othala Nauthiz" to spell that out. We would NOT use Perthro, Hagalaz or Ehwaz simply because this is extremely phonetically inaccurate.

ALWAYS REMEMBER that the English letters are very different in sound than the Runic letters, for example we must not assume that an English E is actually the Rune Ehwaz - UNLESS the E in the word actually sounds the same. This applies to most of the Runic alphabet.

Online Rune converters are almost always inaccurate because they are using American English letters and associating them with the Runic letters simply by the WAY THEY LOOK - not by the way they SOUND. Please beware with Rune converters online, especially if you are planning on getting something tattooed on you!

One last mention: Double letters do not need to be accounted for when transcribing, it is just unnecessary and I do not do double letters in my own work.


I know that is a lot of information to take in if you are new to the Runes! But over time and with enough exposure it becomes really easy. I have been doing this for the better part of my life, so I make it extremely easy for you by doing the Runic transcriptions for you - IF this is what you choose. This is actually how The Wicked Griffin was born. At the time, there was no accurate Runic transcription jewelry available, so I took my two loved skills (jewelry making and the Runes) and combined them!
