Big, bold, beautiful and high end quality! What a stunner! I love it! I was so excited to find this gorgeous bracelet at such an amazing price. It was exactly what I’ve been looking for and I could hardly wait for it to arrive. Luckily I didn’t have to. I swear it literally showed up on my doorstep, carefully wrapped and packaged, the very next day. The popularity of both collecting and wearing vintage costume jewelry is mainly due to a growing appreciation for the fact that you can buy exceptional craftsmanship style, and highly innovative designs for substantially less than you can buy precious stone and gold/silver jewelry. In fact many times you will find far more interesting designs in costume jewelry than you do with the precious equivalent, designs such as these. This is particularly true of many of the high-end pieces made from the late 1920s to the mid-1950s. After the Great Depression in the late 20s and early 30s, due to slow sales, many of the real talented designers and artists who had been working in the precious jewelry industry moved into costume jewelry, taking their considerable skills with them. This was during a time when trend-setting clothes designers such as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and Hattie Carnegie were promoting the idea, for the first time, that it was “cool” to wear jewelry made from non-precious materials.
Collectors Note:
On Signed Designer Pieces. A piece of jewelry that has been signed definitively places the work in their oeuvre. This gives the piece a personal history that it might not otherwise have—fixed in place, time, style, and intent. In addition, signed designer pieces indicate that a designer viewed the work as worthy enough to want his or her name to be forever associated with it. This indicates that the piece was made with a concentration on high-quality construction or perhaps trendy or progressive design.
On Glass Made to Emulate Gemstones. Glass has long been used by jewelers to simulate natural gemstones. For instance, during the Georgian era, black dot paste is a term that refers to a style of glass that was made to simulate the sparkle of natural diamonds. But in the 1940s, the use of glass to simulate gemstones ramped up more than ever before. World War II constrained both fine materials and pocketbooks, so more and more designers (including high-end designers) focused on glass to re-create the distinctive properties of different gems. High-end designers thus began making costume glass jewelry - but with the same attention to detail, high craftsmanship, and design skill that was applied to fine jewelry.
