Taking time to notice the beauty that surrounds us here in Maine
There are over 4,600 islands on the coast of Maine and 3,478 miles of coastline. So much natural beauty to explore! I find myself drawn to the colors and the quiet, wanting to capture all that Maine is. How do you quantify or name or explain a breathtaking view? I see the changing colors in the sky, the reflection on the water that changes with each shift in wind or current, and the spaciousness of it all. I hear harmony: in some of my work you will notice sheet music subtlety blended in the landscape. There are parts, pieces, movement, and color in the Maine landscape, as well as a wholeness that pulls me to capture it in paint.
2020 has sharpened my senses and brought me even more in tune with the natural world around me. There may not have been bustling streets this summer with art vendors, the ferris wheel and lime rickeys here in Yarmouth for what would be the annual Clam Festival. There may not have been concerts at sunset on the lawn of Thompson’s Point, but there are always cotton candy skies. That you can count on, at least once a week, pandemic or no pandemic, every summer in Maine.
This year has taught me to take a little extra time to see the beauty that surrounds me. I am reminded that this natural beauty is here for us to enjoy all year round — we just need to slow down to take it in.
Wherever you find yourself on the globe, I hope that my art will bring you the same grounding and presence that I’ve felt while making it. Thank you so much for supporting my small business.
