Welcome to ArtBirdsNature (formerly berkeleySU) - Prints and Art from Nature. Ken Januski is an artist living in Philadelphia, PA. All of my recent work focuses on nature, birds in particular. I have exhibited in the annual exhibition of the Society of Wildlife Artists in London in 2011, 2012 ,2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Though there are numerous bird and wildlife art juried shows this is the only one that I make a serious attempt to get into. I am not British. My background is thoroughly American. I just find British and European wildlife art the most appealing. I think that is primarily because much of it is less enthralled by photographic likeness and more concerned with the life of bird and environment and also with artistic life. I'm also happy to say that I exhibited one of my moku hanga prints at the Sumi-Fusion Exhibition at The International Moku Hanga Conference in Japan in late 2021. Since I'm fairly new to moku hanga this is a great honor to me. As is my participation in the annual exhibits of the Society of Wildlife Artists. I will also exhibit in the exhibition at the 4th International Moku Hanga Conference in 2024.
To buyers: Since I occasionally buy at Etsy myself I sometimes find myself in your shoes. I say this specifically about being pestered to write reviews of purchases. I often ask buyers to leave reviews if they are comfortable doing so. But I don’t want to be a pest so I say it once in a note accompanying purchase and leave it at that. I hope Etsy will do the same. I don’t like to be pestered and I assume others don’t either.
This store was formerly called berkeleySU, a tip of the hat to the place where I began my printmaking education, the basement of the student union at UC Berkeley. As the store primarily sold my prints when I opened it seemed appropriate. But I have a very lengthy history in abstract art. I also have a fairly old blog called Art, Birds, Nature which seems to well summarize my interests. In 2016 I finally decided to try to unify my blog and my Etsy store by using the same name for both. The store now includes work in linocut and woodcut as well as watercolor, acrylic and various drawing media. In 2017 I also began working in moku hanga, a Japanese method of woodblock printing. That is now my primary artistic medium.
My older strictly abstract work is also available on Etsy at OldAndAbstract.

5 out of 5 starsI really love Ken's woodblock prints—this is the fourth I've added to my collection. His work strikes a rare balance by depicting the birds and their environment in a geometric abstract style without compromising the defining features of the species and a natural connection between the birds and habitat. Just really love this style!

5 out of 5 starsA really stunning piece - this has to be one of my favorites. Egrets have a special meaning for me given their relative scarcity in my locale — and what triumphant, elegant birds. Ken’s rendition gives me the same thrill as when I see one of these birds in the wild. The pose and form of the bird are wonderful — and all of the colors delightful. I cannot wait to frame and display.

5 out of 5 starsAs always, item shipped very promptly and was carefully packaged. The artwork is beautiful, and it is very meaningful to have a piece drawing attention to the red knots. Ken’s artwork is what initially drew me in to shorebirds, and I am very pleased to have this new piece in my collection!

5 out of 5 starsMy whole family is ecstatic about this woodcut!! We have a very special relationship with a family of catbirds that returns to our yard year after year. I think catbirds are so beautiful, but they are totally underrepresented in art. This is the only depiction I've found that really captures their personality and spirit. I gave it to my mom for her birthday, and she loves it so much, she joked about redecorating the kitchen to match the woodprint! Also, for those wanting to give this framed, I was able to just mail order a very simple white frame from Michaels that I think works really well ("white belmont frame by studio decor"). My mom has it proudly displayed next to her garden hats that she wears outside when she feeds golden raisins to our catbirds. If you ever make other catbird images, let me know, I'd love to see!
