This father / daughter team makes welded metal goodness that will put a smile on your face.
Hi! I’m Alissa. I'm 14 years old and I weld DeskPets. One of my favorite TV shows is Mythbusters. In order to make what the Mythbusters need to test the myths, sometimes they have to weld. I wanted to be a Mythbuster too and to do that I decided I wanted to learn welding.
Since I was only 10 when I wanted to start welding, I could not sign up for a formal course. As a result my Dad, Jason, took a course to be able to learn himself and then teach me. When he told his instructor about me, the instructor invited me to come weld with him before my Dad’s class. I learned all about Mig and Stick welding. I even got to use the plasma cutter and oxy-acetylene torch! I made my very first piece that day. It was a snowboarder and I wanted to do more!
My Dad also enjoys welding and set out to get a welder and make us a shop in the garage. I am so appreciative that he has done this! As I practiced, my skills improved and I was able to show friends and family my varied creations. With their encouragement and suggestions to enter craft shows, DeskPets, LLC was born!
I am the Chief Welder and Creative Visionary. My Dad makes pieces as well, but is also my Assistant Welder, Head Trainer, Chief Motivator, Financial Backer, Chauffer, Logistics Coordinator, Quality Control Inspector, and First Aid Provider. Some pieces are mine, some are his, and many are created by both of us.
We use scrap and repurposed material whenever possible. Our workbench is made from warehouse pallet rack shelving. The plasma cutter table is made entirely from metal bed frames. Our creations have used pieces from barbecues, bicycles, toaster ovens, chain saws, auto parts, and rusty tools. We have found some amazing things at garage sales and second-hand stores, which otherwise would have made their way into a landfill.
I have a great time welding with my Dad. So far the injuries have been minor and the garage hasn’t burned down. I hope our love of fusing metal into these unique crafts puts a smile on your face!
