Joyful folk art for nature lovers
Hi! I’m Emilie, the artist and illustrator behind Dream Folk Studio.
I create joyful folk art inspired by nature, nostalgia, and the little bits of magic hiding in the everyday.
I grew up on a farm in South Dakota, where some of my best friends were cats and there was always something outside worth noticing. I still live here in the land of endless prairies and cotton-candy sunsets, and the natural world continues to find its way into nearly everything I make.
I’m endlessly inspired by wildflowers and gardens, moths at porch lights, birds and mushrooms, old books and vintage illustrations, childhood nostalgia, records playing in the early morning, long bike rides on country roads, and all the wonderful colors and tiny details of the world around us.
Over the years, I’ve become especially interested in the relationships within nature—not just a flower, but the bee that visits it; not just a mushroom, but the tiny snail making its way past. I love creating little worlds that feel joyful and familiar from afar and give you more to discover when you look closely.
Dream Folk began in 2011, during a time when I was dreaming of becoming an artist but wasn’t quite sure I could be one. I had spent years believing that because I didn’t draw realistically, I wasn’t particularly good at drawing. Discovering illustration changed that. I realized art didn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful—and that the wonky lines, bold colors, imagination, and personality were actually the good parts.
So I drew. A lot. I built Dream Folk little by little while staying home and raising my boys, eventually turning the thing I had dreamed about for years into my full-time work.
Today, every Dream Folk piece begins with my original artwork and a hope that it might bring a little more color, encouragement, curiosity, or wonder into someone’s everyday life. I make art for people who stop to admire an interesting mushroom, get excited when the first flowers bloom, still love old storybooks, and believe our homes should be filled with things that mean something to us.
More than anything, I hope Dream Folk encourages you to notice and love the wild world around you.
If you’ve read this far, thank you. Truly. Every order allows me to keep drawing, exploring, and making this little dream of mine possible.
Nice to meet you. ♡
