Painting with Fire
Encaustic medium is a mixture of natural beeswax, tree sap (damar resin) and pigment. Using a hot plate, the mixture is heated which allows it to then be painted using a natural bristle brush onto a support. It hardens on contact with the support. In order to work the hardened medium, the strokes are carefully reflowed and moved using a torch. It is literally painting with fire. With skill and great care, a tremendous range of texture, effects and depth can be achieved that is not possible with any other medium. Every painting is a unique original because it cannot be fully captured by any duplication process. It is expensive and labor intensive but you will not find the unique qualities of an encaustic painting in any other artistic medium.
I have been working in encaustics since 2014 and it teaches me something new every time I work with it. I hope you find a unique piece in this shop that speaks to you.
I look forward to connecting with you!
