Moissanite chemically known as Silicon Carbide (SiC). Moissanite is a rare gem that has almost all qualities of a diamond. It was first discovered in 1893, while a scientist Henri Moissan was examining meteor samples from a crater at Canyon Diablo, Arizona. Upon first glance he thought he had found diamonds, but a few years later after some lab testing they were identified it as new spectacular gem. The crystalline structure of Moissanite is held together with strong covalent bonding similar to diamonds, that allows moissanite to withstand high pressures up to 52.1 giga pascals.
This rare discovery is named Moissanite in honor of the scientist Henri Moissan on in his life of research work and contribution to science.
Scientist from all around the worlds have searched far and wide to find more about the moissanite upon seeing such a breathtaking gem. Later more samples were found in Kimberlite from a Russian Diamond Mine in Yakutia and Green River Formation in Wyoming, but yet the existence of moissanite in nature was questionable as naturally very rare occurring this is a very scarce gemstone. Moissanite, in its natural form, remains very rare. It has been discovered only in a few rocks, from upper mantle rock to meteorites. Realizing the potential of this material, scientists determined a way to create it in a laboratory in the 1990’s. Since then we now have an amazing stone that is superior to diamonds that can be made at a fraction of the cost.
