It all started with a box of treasures!
I fell in love with Mexican Jewellery as a child, my mum travelled to Mexico in the late 70s and brought back some amazing treasures! On weekends I would help her set up her stalls in London markets, I watched and tried to absorb her wisdom.
Later on in my teens I travelled there and went to art school. I studied to become a silversmith in Mexico under the tutelage of two amazing masters of metal.
I wanted to do something creative from a very early age and I was inspired by our family business, trading in the markets and shopping excursions to Mexico, all these things definitely made me follow in their footsteps!
Many, many years later my mum gave me her collection of 70s Mexican jewellery and that's where it all started!
I chose the name Mexica (MEH-SHE-KA) in honour of the ancient Aztecs, ancestors of the Nahua people who inspire me so much with their vibrant art.
I love Mexico for so many reasons, but mostly for the amazing colours, the rich culture and the wonderful people.
I work with my family and friends in Mexico to create the jewellery and paintings and bring a taste of this colourful culture to you!
A bit about my family...
My daughter Ambar is a Tattoo artist and painter who works with artist Isabel to create the beautiful Bark Painting designs. Isabel is an amazing Nahua lady that keeps Mexican culture alive. My son Mikaele is a jeweller and designer who creates some of the more intricate pieces and works with local Mexican artisans who carry on the age old art of shell inlay.
We love what we do, we hope you do too. 🧡
