A Unique Slate with a Unique History!
The geologic deposit that forms the rich black color of Monson Slate only occurs in one location in the United States - Monson, Maine. I often refer to this slate as Nature's Pottery! Once part of the deep ocean floor, the sediments became buried under tremendous heat and pressure. This formed the rich black color only found in Monson Slate!
The applications of this slate have been as fascinating as the deep rich black color! Quarries produced stone for shingles, black boards, electrical components, construction material, sinks and countertops, and much more. The most historic application of Monson Black Slate has been using it for the headstone of former U.S. President, John F. Kennedy.
The deep black color of this slate does not fade. Pieces do not damage easily due to their high density and strength. When heated by the sun or by heat lamp, the stones absorb heat faster and hold it longer than lighter colored and less dense rocks.
I encourage everyone to visit the Monson, Maine historical society webpage to view all the amazing history surrounding Monson Black Slate!
