Mud Hedz, Really Cool, Handmade, Ceramic Pipes
Mud Hedz pipes are designed, and made by artist, Ruth Plaster. They are “really cool” handmade pipes. Mud Hedz pipes are cool looking and lovely to use; with fun designs, bright colored glazes and tactile finishes. They, provide a smooth, cooled smoke; as they have roomy hollow bodies. And they remain cool and comfortable to the touch, because they are made of porous earthenware clay.
The inspiration for Mud Hedz, pipe designs grew out of the artist’s attraction to vintage salt and pepper shakers and to her flea market found collection of 1960’s and 70’s hobby ceramic objects. Just like the pieces that inspired them, Ruth’s pipes are made using the slip casting process. Slip casting involves pouring liquid clay (slip) into plaster molds allowing the pieces to cure for a while and then pouring out the excess slip. The result is a thin walled, hollow clay form.
Mud Hedz pipes, are poured and formed in plaster molds that Ruth casts over hand sculpts, actual objects and sometimes, a combination of both. Every Mud Hedz pipe is unique; as each is hand tooled, shaped, smoothed and perfected by the artist; before it is dried, fired, glazed and refired.
Mud Hedz pipes are glazed inside and out with dinnerware safe, lead free glazes. They are easy to clean and will hold up for many years. Ruth is proud to be one of a handful of clay artist who are forging an appreciative market for small batch, hand cast, ceramic pipes.
