Recovery Through the Healing Power of Art
During Heather's time in the military, she developed a brain tumor that was promptly surgically removed. Shortly after, she lost her entire memory and couldn't read, write, walk or talk. She suffered many other complications of the surgery which was not only difficult for her but also friends and family. Many many years of therapy were required to aid in her healing process. But the one that stood out the most for her was Art Therapy. From the first time she was able to hold a pencil again, she was (and still is!) addicted to all things art.
After not being able to go back in the military or work a civilian job, Heather struggled. All she could do was art in the comfort of her home. Thoughts of selling her work did cross her mind, however, her disabilities prevented her from doing that as well. At the time, her niece and kid brother, were just tiny tots. Heather made an awesome aunt and big sister. It was something she was really good at and could actually do despite her challenges. For years, that was her mission in life; helping to make sure the little ones were well taken care of.
Seven years into recovery, Heather met, her now husband, Alan. Although they have many things in common, the biggest one is art. Heather needed extra care at this point so Alan became her full time care giver. Needing to be able to work from home so he could also assist his wife, Alan set up an Etsy shop, in hopes that it will one day take off so he can continue to stay home and take care of Heather.
