About SunRain
I’m John, a retired engineer and surveyor in Omaha, Nebraska, and I make something you’ve probably never quite seen before.
Each SunRain is a handmade prism suncatcher created from genuine Egyptian lead-crystal chandelier prisms. When placed in direct sunlight, it transforms a sunny window into vivid bands of rainbow light that move across walls, floors, and ceilings.
The rainbows travel as the sun crosses the sky. Their shapes, colors, and locations change throughout the day and with the seasons. Sometimes individual spectra overlap, mixing violet, blue, cyan, green, yellow, orange, and red into unexpected new colors.
I began developing SunRain after retiring from a 36-year career in engineering and surveying. Geometry was always my favorite subject, and I have long been fascinated by optics, refraction, and the physics of color.
After experimenting with crystal prisms and cast-resin centers, I discovered that arranging the prisms in a circular sunburst could do much more than create a few small points of color. It could scatter brilliant bands of light throughout an entire room.
The moment of discovery came at about five o’clock on a winter afternoon. I hung the first SunRain in our living-room window and moved it into direct sunlight. Suddenly, the room lit up with stripes of rainbow color.
On the opposite wall, about 30 feet away, were complete light spectra measuring roughly 14 inches long and two inches wide. Another appeared several feet away, and more moved across the room as the sunlight changed.
I knew then that I had created something different.
Every SunRain is assembled by hand in my Omaha workshop. I individually select and position 25 crystal prisms in a circular arrangement around a cast-resin center. I check their placement repeatedly before pouring the resin that locks the design together.
After the resin cures, I clean, inspect, and polish each finished piece myself. The arrangement, proportions, materials, and construction are all chosen to produce a strong, vivid display of rainbow light.
A SunRain is more than a window decoration. It is a small, sunlight-powered installation that changes a room for a little while each day.
SunRain suncatchers now bring moving color into sunny rooms across the country. They make meaningful gifts because they change more than how a room looks—they change how it feels.
