I’m Bec, the artist/owner behind Rebel Rose Curiosities.
I've been making art as long as I can remember, and I've always been fascinated by nature- especially the under-appreciated parts like bugs and decay. So when I incorporated a scavenged deer vertebrae into a found objects sculpture, I knew I had found my artistic niche.
That was in 2017, and I've come a long way since then. I've learned how to scavenge remains responsibly and ethically, and how to properly preserve them. I've purchased and learned how to use a variety of tools. I've experimented with different ways to clean skulls (some are less gross than others.) I've learned the names of crystals, and where to find the best air plants. I'm always learning and continuing to improve.
I believe in giving animals a second life through art, honoring them and giving them some dignity back, challenging the taboos around death, and making something that can be considered morbid into something beautiful that everyone can enjoy and relate to.
All of my organic materials are ethically sourced; all the bones are found in nature, or very occasionally purchased from other small business owners that I trust. The insects I find myself or order in bulk from small businesses that work directly with conservations. Wet specimens I harvest myself from animals that I find in good enough condition to taxidermy, or source from food industry waste. Most of the other materials that I use, such as vintage light fixtures and frames, reclaimed wood, and glass beads, are found in local thrift shops. I enjoy repurposing discarded and broken things.
The new materials I use are mainly in jewelry making. All of the chains and jewelry hooks I use are hypo-allergenic, and I have high standards of cleanliness in all my pieces.
Shipping is always free in the U.S.! I believe that art and oddities should be for everyone.
I hope you enjoy browsing my shop and find something that speaks to you. If you have any questions about my art, feel free to message me.
